There should be more NU 12 class?

Dr Ed Morato and his staff usually say that it is better to have the entrep students shot down in the classroom, rather than having the student lose zillions once he implements it.

In the submission of the NU 12, I guess some students are sometimes dumbfounded that their ideas were not accepted/published.

Early in my entrep life, I got engrossed in joining the growth business then - consumer electronics.  i bought a lot of new books on consumer electronics ranging from ICs, robotics, medical electronics, radios, telephony.  I befriended a lot of engineers and technicians from Panasonic whose plant was in a nearby town.  Matsushita became a business hero.

I organized the assembly, bought materials equipment and came out with hundreds of radio.  We called the company Novateq.  I had 3 engineers working for me and a former senior design staff of National was working for me.  I had the assembly and making the product all figured out. I was too much focussed on production side.

However, I made the dumbest mistake of all:  not knowing how to sell the product.  I did not know whether the radio we made was desired by the market or the contacts at Raon.  My marketing knowledge and asset was 0.  It could have been avoided had I joined a class just like I am conducting on NU 12.  The SOB professor would criticize my ideas and shoot the wild ones down.  There was none.  I wish there was one.

I lost PHP 300,000, a large sum at that time. It was a commission for a job well done at a real estate project.  Sayang.

Noteworthy ID redesign

I had the chance to peek at the ID redesign of Sentrep Class at Salcedo.  They were serious and passionate about the redesign.  (compared to the previous class)  I would update publish their work. I thought I saw the ID of an actor and I requested to have a copy?

Are your school's MBA students worthy of being called Master/Gurus?

In one of the entrep talks, I was asked that question.  I remember it was duirng an MBAH entrep class entrep guest presentation and the guest who is from UP, an MBA (he was a milk company comptroller, and he did a lot of asset swaps, back to back leasing when the financial crisis stuck). shocked me with the question "Are your students now, worthy of being called Masters/Gurus?  During our time, our training made so good in business and strategic thinking"

I was shocked and frankly I did not know the answer.  I did not know what kind of stuff my fellow professors were teaching the MBA students, and whether there were assessments made to that effect.

Do we have gurus and Masters in our midst? Really?

Judging from some of the Strama defenses I attended, and from some of the BP submitted to me, and during case analyses which I did after that question was raised, and from the forum on the net on which is the best MBA school?,  I hate that I was asked that question.

     l.  Many lack critical thinking;

     2.  In the area of Personal Mastery (just coming to school on time and regularly;  submitting all the assignments)

     3.  Many fare badly in case analysis

     4. Many lack the rigor of use of research data and facts.  Some think that my subject does not have rigor.

In our search for being the biggest, we neglected quality.  However I admire the male strama professors who make sure that the school MBA imprint is deserved by those who wear it. I joined the ranks of faculty who were more rigorous and even flunked those who did not deserve to be called MBA.  (Now many of them are now forgotten and me included are at the backdoor)

I would have to do a lot more work (with our colleagues, to answer yes to that question.

I will check the Business Plans today and tomorrow Christmastime

I got all the 13 business plans of the Sentrep class.  They were due December 20;  however the last day of the class was December 19.  Those who submitted last December l9 at AGSB will be graded after Jan 8, the first day of class in 2013 (RJ, who did, re - submitted via LBC -  I got her LBC send today.

5 papers were in partnership:  9 were solo. Those who are in partnership will get a maximum grade of 3 only.  Congrats to those who dared and went solo.  They learned invaluable lessons about business, business planning, research, creativity and above all entrepreneurship.

I noticed that some did not meet the basic requirement of at least 40 pages.  One paper will free me from checking because it did not meet the requirement of being written in a prescribed format. (They did not listen or read the syllabus.)

The business plan writing is a dry run for strama course. Those who listened well who understood what strategy is all about, and went through the rigor of business plan writing did well in their strama.  Well those who did not....

Personal mastery and systems thinking is the strategy

I used to be enamored with strategy early on.  However as I mature as a businessman, strategy is very remote in the mind of the troops/employees.

Thus after I studied Peter Senge "The Fifth Discipline" and there are numerous writings on his works as "The Strategy"  I began to wonder.

Then it sank to me: a computer network or a dozen ipads, or a fleet of vehicles will not make you execute your strategy -  sometimes your organization will make them them all inutile.  In my experience in facilitation for strategy, I can see how people are so stuck in old mindset and systems -  they could not simply let go even if they know that they are standing or lying on a hot pan.  They will always mention how they have done that before.  You can observe their behavior in the workshop or production of outputs or even how they eat or interact what ails their organization

The two disciplines  mentioned above are:   personal mastery (habits) and systems thinking.  These are more important than the objectives and key activities and resources

It is more important for the mentor/strategist to:

1,  Work on the habits/personal mastery and systems thinking (what structures make the people behave in the organization?  The reporting system, the table arrangement, the salaries, rewards?)

2.  Or better work on the pro - motion (as Dr. Ned Roberto said)  work on the action rather than the value system

What do you think?

Can you make your soldiers fight if they are devout religious fanatics (not to kill?)

All Around AGSB there is progress (?)

Unlike the story of Mohammad Yunus, founder of  Grameen bank (where all around was poverty around university and therefore the developmental economics he was teaching was ineffectual and therefore intervention must be made at the community around the University) it is quite different at AGSB.  We simply do not know which is the effect and cause?

Positive thinking can help you bounce back from failure/solve problems

From entrepreneur.com

Positive thinking is an old idea.  From Napoleon Hill, Dennis Waitley, we go this idea.  We also got this Daniel Goleman on Emotional Intelligence (EQ)  - the ability to motivate oneself and  others.

There are negative emotions:  shame, guilt, panic, fear and they overcome the entrepreneur clouding their judgements and ability to think clearly.

Once looked as trifle and minor, positive thinking is looked upon as central to resiliency in times of crisis and is critical to innovation, persistence, and success.  This is according to the book of Positivity by Barbara Fredrickson of University of North Carolina. This is called the undo effect

One way of overcoming anxiety before the speech is by having positive images of beach, nature or dog. For entrepreneurs who experience adversity and failure, we can have positive images through gratitude.  We can be happy by being grateful for our blessings.  There is so much for be happy for our blessings

How to run your business like Santa

From Money/US News

You can definitely benchmark Santa Claus (if he is true or imagined) on how to run/Manage a successful business:

l. Plan ahead; planning means preparing far in advance.  By December 26, Santa would be preparing for Christmas next year;

2.  Reward the doers;

3.  Give positive feedback (to the deer and workers who prepare the gifts

4.  Stick to a winning strategy (He has stuck to his game plan ever since)

5.  Focus on the customers - those who will receive the gift.  the nice ones.

But then again, it this the best way for customers to receive the gift?  A new business model is needed;  the link can be changed:   you can Fed Ex or DHL the gift and save him from the wear and tear of going around himself every Christmas...

How to manage like Santa Claus

Some guidelines when busines is failing

From women entrepreneur secret.

What do you do when your business go on downward spiral?

l.  Panic

2.  Quit

3.  Look for alibis

4.  Analyze and think

5. Act

Definitely I would go for # 4 and # 5.  Here are other tips from a post at women entrepreneur secret:

l.  Gather your doers at a powwow -  do not include the negative thinkers and whiners, complainer;

2.  Get off the road and think;

3.  Benchmark;  look at other business models

4,  Remove fear

Thinking like a designer can inspire more innovation

By Nadia  Goodman at Entrepreneur.com

We could be innovative just like the late Steve Jobs if we think like a designer (Making a dent in the universe or mouthing "Be foolish just wont do).  The thought came from Bill Burnett, executive director of the design center of Stanford University in California, one of the leading design schools at USA.  The training that I got at Bangkok from one of their professors probably started in their school.

Some of the tips:

l. Observe the customers on how they use the product.

2.  Find the right problem.  For example, in the finding the right problem for infant deaths, it is not the absence of incubators, but the need for low cost incubators to transport babies from babies born in huts to the hospital  (made from aluminum tin foil or ceiling insulators -  reflectix materials?)

3. Brainstorm and come out with a hundred ideas/options

4.  Prototype -  there is no entrepreneurship/innovation unless you have a protype/working mode/ or even a mock up.  The idea will just remain an idea.  The prototype mock up will give a you a feedback on #1 and what must you do further to come out with the right product

How a designer mindset could make a hundred flowers bloom

Entrepreneur cafes to launch new ventures

From entrepeneur.com

A number of events (dubbed as entrepreneur cafes) have been held somewhere in USA to help launch entrepreneurial ventures.  It is a sort of gestation/germination events, where pitches are made for a new venture.  The funds that may be raised maybe small but that could be enough germ/seminal effort to start the venture.  We know that sometimes start ups are launched by amounts less than it costs a basic cellphone.

These events are characterized by "pitch".  In my entrep class, I ask for the students, to make a pitch - not just make a presentation but to make a pitch -  ie, to convince the audience to act, invest, or buy the product. Just talking wont do;   convincing, making  the sales pitch is the only way to go.

In the PHL, we should have this too;  perhaps colleges, internet cafes, vendors of coffee, Starbucks, Figaro, or fast food:   Jollibee, Mang Inasal, McDo could sponsor such entrepeneur cafe forum.

How about our business?  (memorial park?)

More factors on Entrepreneurial Leadership Qualities

 From B2C

One of the first papers to be submitted in the Ateneo GSB Entrep classes is "What Factors Do you possess that make/does not make you an entrepreneur"  (Factors Paper) We see a lot interesting answers which I post here at this site, so that non MBA students, other entrepreneur wannabees, could learn from their reflections.

Most take on line questionnaires, analyze the results and make conclusion as to their entrepreneurial inclination.  Some just do an experiential, effectuation analysis.

Here is an interesting post on what traits you must possess to be an entrprenuerial leader

Please read on if you want to know more

More young people are becoming entreps at USA

 From NPR.org

The shrinking job market at US has forced many young workers to be on their own.  The job stats in US (as in the PHL) could be misleading.  Those who leave the job market (unemployed) could be actually start ups creating new jobs.

Thus, the crisis in the job market could actually be creating new opportunities for new businesses and entrepreneurship.

Say goodbye to employment; be your own boss

Why you need to learn how to write a business plan

 From small business success blog

For most students, I think, writing a business plan is a big challenge.  Despite the long lead time given to them (45 days after the semester officially ends) 3 to 5 per batch fail to submit the business plan on time.  For those who submit, the rigor of of making a business plan does not set it.

The on going rate for a business plan is about P200t per.  It could be a good way to earn in the future.  Not many MBA grads, I think know how to write a winning business plan.  I yet have to see my students join a business plan writing competition.  I did announce before a Larry Farrell business plan writing competition (NO ONE JOINED SUBMITTED A PAPER SO I HAD TO STOP IT)

Here is another reason/post why a business plan is needed

Submission of business plans last December 20, 2012

I received yesterday 11 business plans via LBC courier at my office in Angono, Rizal.  Several were in partnership with one another.  Two submitted earlier:   one from Icham, and other from CC.

However the thin ones I could easily say did not conform to the minimum of 40 pages as specified in the syllabus.  I will have to sweat out checking those business plan during the vacation.

I have to see whether they learned from the class during the semester.  Those who do in partnership will suffer when they do the strama

One submitted at AGSB last December 19, 2012 at the last day of classes and I will not see until Jan 7, 2013.

Sentrep class/Christmas party last December 18, 2012

The Sentrep class at de la Costa decided to have Christmas party last night December 18, 2012.  The one who cooked was Athens de la Cruz who I learned later on is from Pampanga.  She said that her grandfather admonished that in their family:   guests must be satisfied when when they are feted with good food.

JP (of Emperador Light bought four bottles of wine) while Cams brought two l.5 liters of softdrinks.  I brought some prizes:   potato chips and Kit Kats which the class ate too.  The wine that I brought was not touched.

Music was provided by You Tube!!!

It was a great way to end 2012 (and the world?  it is big joke do you believe it?) ( I told them to be ready with an essay on "What I did during the Christmas vacation....")

The janitorial and security staff also were invited to the Christmas party

Hi Sir,

I forwarded the factors paper to the NU 12 email address. I just read page 22 of the syllabus and it was instructed there that we should submit factors paper at profjorge.entrep.ateneo@blogger.com

Kindly see Factors Paper below which I submitted last December 11 but to the NU 12 email address.

Hoping for a consideration. Thanks!

Mr. Jorge Saguinsin
Factors Paper

While doing the research paper for the Factors paper, I was able to stumble upon several or even numerous resources that provided me the essential factors of being an entrepreneur. I particularly chose the Entrepreneurial Success Factors by Dragan found in the website I cited in the references. I chose it because it was very detailed and provided me a deep and thorough insight on the characteristics of an entrepreneur. According to the author there are 15 factors that make an entrepreneur and below are these factors. The way I did my self-assessment was to go through each factor and analyze whether I possess or do not posses such factor. On the table below, the left side is where the factors cited by the author that would shape a person to become a successful entrepreneur and the right side is my thorough self-analysis of each factor.  Truthfully, I appreciate such exercise – self-assessment, because it pushes me to look back at my life and re-discover who I am as a person.

Factors
Self-assessment
1.     Willingness to take action - This is the first and most important factor or each potential and current entrepreneur. All other factors presented below, won't have importance if he or she didn't take a real action.

I highly and strongly believe that in this factor I'm still half-baked. I am so blessed that in the early course of my young adult life I have discovered that being an entrepreneur is what I really want and I've decided that the corporate life is not the path I will no longer journey in two years time. I have been blessed to discover what I really want but knowing is only one thing. Being an entrepreneur won't happen if I don't act upon it. I think the call to materialize my desires is still my biggest challenge and the number reason for this, is that I have so much fear to fail and to risk everything for the something that is uncertain. Unless I conquer that fear, I may not be able to pass the first stage of being an entrepreneur.
2.     Knowledge - they must have superior knowledge about business issues for business that they start.
I have not fully earned this factor because one I don't have the experience to gain and earn knowledge about entrepreneurship but I believe I have taken huge steps to develop this skill. First, I enrolled in MBA to further develop myself and learn more about the subject of entrepreneurship. Second, I have been trying to discover and learn more about our family business by asking my dad from time to time the history of the business and how it works.
3. Creativity. They must have creativity to be unique and continuously improves business.

I am blessed to be born with a creative mind. Since grade school I have noticed that I have an "eye" for things.  Maybe the reason for that is that I am surrounded with a family who loves being creative and unique and you are allowed to appreciate art in all forms. What is significantly lacking is my ability to give time to hone and further improve this factor.
4. Skills - Each entrepreneur and each business need different entrepreneurial skills that in some cases can be crucial for business success.
Similar with the knowledge factor, I believe I have not fully developed my entrepreneurial skills but I have taken a huge leap by enrolling in this class and finishing my MBA to further improve and hone my entrepreneurial skills. I consider also that I have gained a few entrepreneurial skills over the time I have worked in the corporate world.
5. Intelligence - They must be intelligent to manage all possible situations and to solve the hardest problems that will be a constant in business life.
Again, similar with skills and knowledge, I have not fully possessed this factor. And again, I believe have taken the necessary steps to further build on this factor.
6. Patience - They must be patient and to continue after losing the first battle, because the war is not finished. It's only the beginning.
This is one factor I am certain I strongly possess. I am the type of person who can extend the utmost patience to any person or the situation I am in. I am not the typical who is restless and demands answers immediately from people, the environment or myself. In addition, I don't easily give up. I try until I know have I have exhausted all means, measures and resources.
7. Persistence - Persistence simply is a refusal to give up from something, or ability to keep your actions against your personal feelings that you're not ready for such actions. Feelings and motivation didn't produce results, but the action is something that will produce it.
I am still confused about this factor because I am the type of person who has the resilience to deliver results and that highly contributes to being persistent. However, while reading the definition of the factor, I believe I have not possessed the factor of persistence fully. I have the tendency to decide based on my emotions and that I know is exceedingly wrong because I would be making irrational decisions.  I am aware of this mistake, and I have been working tremendously hard to change this trait of mine and to always make decision based on facts and objectivity.
8. Teamwork - Nobody can achieve anything alone so this is true also for an entrepreneur because they're not a "Superman". They must be team players for their business success.
I am the biggest fan of this factor, as I've always believed that teamwork will bring any organization to a success that is immeasurable. At work, I highly promote this essence because without it people will be doing their own thing that will just result to a waste of resources. With teamwork, objectives and goals are easier to achieve and accomplish.
9. Calculated risk - This is truly one of the most important questions: did they take the risk? Yes, each business startup is in some level risky. However, more important is how a successful entrepreneur takes a risk? The word calculated risk is the most appropriate word for this feature.
Similarly with the factor of willingness to take action, this is one factor I have yet to possess. As mentioned above, I have a huge fear of the uncertain. I think I grew up in an environment where I had the perception that being "safe" should be the right path to choose because it has less consequences and failures. The disadvantage of this is that it led me to be a person that became highly fearful of risks, which eventually led me to this situation – having the difficulty of taking that first step of becoming an entrepreneur.
10.  Self-Confidence - Self-confidence is a really important and key factor. I think that nobody would be an entrepreneur if don't have self-confidence that he knows how to start and manage their own business.
I strongly believed I have possessed this factor already early at my life. I grew up in an environment where my parents taught me to love who I am and not to be afraid to show the unique me. So I grew up having the least insecurities. I am not afraid to gain my fullest potential and to show the world what I am made of.
11.  Experience - Sometimes experience is in category not must have as a factor, but it is something that will increase business potential energy. They must employ all present and previous experience they had into the business.
I am very grateful for the experience I have learned over the years from my work and school. The experiences I've gained over the years will truly help me on the time I will start my own business. The next step for me is to further improve this factor by absorbing more experiences.
12.  Talent - Talent is something inborn in an entrepreneur. Sometimes talent can be replaced with knowledge.
I think this particular factor is what I am very unsure of. I really don't know if I have the talent to be an entrepreneur but I guess my other talents can be used for me to build the business I desire of. I am very much passionate about cooking and I believe that I can use this skill to create my own business like a restaurant or a bakery store. I think it is important that if a person wants to be an entrepreneur, he or she must find what she is good at and use this as a leverage to create their own businesses.
13.  Honesty - Honesty is important in every case, but sometimes honesty, can be the biggest enemy of an entrepreneur in some complex conditions.
I am proud to say that this is one factor that I truly possessed. I have been to several situations wherein my honesty was test to its fullest potential and at the end I chose to be the honest person.
14.  Connections - More connection the more possibilities for building a successful business.
This is the factor I have to push myself to work for even more. I know I have built my connections during the course of my corporate but I believe it isn't enough. I lack on making acquaintances becoming stronger working relationships.
15.  Luck - Luck is a psychological factor. Some people can say that they don't have luck. And indeed there are some "lucky people" who just accidentally found the right place at the right time. However, it is a small percentage and cannot be included as a serious factor for success.
I really don't believe in luck because I know that a person will succeed only if he or she does her best and exceed the expectations he/she set for him/herself. However, I do believe that timing is crucial to one's success. You may have the resources and the right skills now but if the timing isn't right then it won't definitely happen.

Faculty and Staff Christmas party today at Rockwell

The AGSB and CCE faculty and staff faculty conference was held today at 2f of APS building at Rockwell.  There were so many new staff of CCE in attendance.

It was good that Perry told me last night at the de la Costa campus about the Christmas party today.

Unfortunately for me there is a day job to attend to;  I left at 10 am and took me nearly 3 hours to reach AGSB.  Traffic was bad. Ortigas Av was jammed from the Tikling side to Robinson Galleria.

There was a lot of games and lots of food.  Some professors I believe were busy with their parties and did not make it.  I met Jackie Chan, Art Zamora, Frank Roa, the Dean,  Charlie Jorge,  Rachel Consunji, Winnie Constantino,  Dr. del Carmen,  Glen San Luis, Ralph Ante, Marivic Castillo, Dr Mansibang, and Dr. Lydia King.  Most of those were the staff. The young ones and  the young once.
