Group 1 was negative for Round 1, Group 2 made it beyond 0 in Round 2, Group 2 who was positive in Round 1 was negative in Round 2.

The opportunity for Final Jeopardy strategy was defeated because all bet l million on as their wager.

Review on Financial Management at Sentrep last February 26, 2013

Room 402 APS, H de la Costa Campus  February 26, 2013

Our schedule last night included:  SR, Case Analysis of Red Crab, and Review of Financial Management.   We were able to do the SR:  "Go Negosyo " by Athens Cruz and "Creativity" by Jaypee Eugenio.

Special reports

Go Negosyo, of which ProfJorge is a part of, is not involved in financing but is involved in changing mindset and or creating entrepreneurial mindset among Filipinos.  Take note that our FDI is practically nil;  yet Philippines is a hotbed of economic growth.  Why - because many locals are taking risks;   many are betting with their own money to start their projects/businesses.  And this is entrepreneurship in action.  The Negosyo efforts paid off, in a way.  The 7.1% economic growth, the PHL as no 6 in the world's fastest growing economy is a dividend, a pay off.

The creativity report mentioned so many books on creativity and many relevant information from Edward de Bono to Einstein, George Bernard Shaw, etc. and many contemporary businesmen and creative people:  Steve Jobs among them.  (Be crazy;  make a dent in the universe.)  Ideas and application of the idea are essential parts of creativity (thus those who fail to apply fail to get their NU 12 posted.

Financial Management

I mentioned some truism on financial management:

l. " The numbers will set you free" -  Harold Geneen

2.  Cash is king.

3.  "You can make a lot of mistakes, and running out of cash is not one of them."

4.  The determination of the bottom line isnt accurate.  The company policy on recognition of income and expenses can vary the outcome.  Some company comptrollers are sometimes cooks or doctors.

5.  The concepts:  cash flow statement, balance sheet, income statement, funds flow were discussed in a whiteboard infographic.  A template shall be sent the students to study and apply.

Start up hiring challenges and how to overcome them

From Globemail on Start Up hiring challenges | October 31, 2012

Start ups are in great dilemna:  they must get great talents up front to get moving in sales operations, and finance.  However, they are cash strapped and have hardly any resources to recruit, retain, retrain great talents.  How  to resolve this problem/dilemna:

l.  Cant adapt to start up style...

2.  How much are you really worth?...

3.  Realignment necessary....

4.  Are you self starter/resourceful?

5.  Uncommitted candidates?  Will they disappear or fail to arrive for orientation?

6.  Can they execute what they say they will?  Or are they just good in promises and speeches/talks?

10 ways to start a business with almost no money

From Globe and Mail | January 31, 2013

How often do we hear the common complaint of start ups, or entrepreneur wanna bees that their biggest concern is the lack of capital.  Nothing can further from the truth.

The capital lies right on top of their shoulders, or right between the ears!

What --- their heads!

Capital comes from capito which is a Latin word for head (thus provincial capitol, army captain, per capita).  The biggest capital of the entrepreneur is his head

Thus entrepreneur can start a business, or any business, without money and that makes entrepreneur truly strategic ie achieving his dream with little or no resources and fulfilling the definition of entrepreneur - ie "starting something with practicality nothing"

Last night, I talked about us starting a bank with almost l00% borrowed money from a rural bank in neighboring town, or starting a real estate project with just P15,000.  Toby's started with just P3,000.00  Splash was started by Drs. Hortaleza with P12,000, one half of the cash gift on their wedding.

Here are some of the 0 money start-up strategies:

1.  Clarify the concept.  What is the customer problem that the entrepreneur wants to solve?  How will the company solve the problem?  What is the product that the entrepreneur wants to come up with? (What pisses you off, the customer, the user etc and come up with the prototype product.  No expensive r and d or thousands of trial needed;   just prototype the product. Hire beg steal or borrow!)

2.  Wireframe the product (Do the prototype, if you can do 3d printing so much the better)  Picture exactly how the product will come up

3.  Do market research (or FGD, or beta testing of your prototype)

4.  Network, network network

5.  Study in the street, university of life

Find out the 5 other strategies.

Remember focus on what you can sell;  prioritize your cap ex/efforts on the product, and not on other irrelevant products/stuff

What are you doing now ProfJorge?

APS, Rockwell Center, Makati City  |  February 23, 2013

I was recently asked by a student this question.  He works for an outsourcing group for a US investment bank.

Well I said I have a day job. The question sure woke me up from what looked like a deep slumber,

I manage 6 memorial parks now, overseeing their sales and completion.;   a lending company with 50 million in assets size. At least 3 MDs ask me for advice on how to run their businesses.  They all look small after reading the article on Nigerian blog on how to be a billionaire.

I stopped growing when I started teaching.  I might quit teaching this year which does not create much value and which has slowed down my entrepreneurial journey. I think I am more tentative and have become less bold in pursuing my dreams (have I stopped dreaming? How about a subaru sti to pursue/to buy.  How about in the Forbes list too?  There is still time...  I am not sure whether what I teach makes sense to past and present students.

Several properties have been presented to me for evaluation.  There is one where the possible partner backed out because we could not get a right of way.  Now I have one:  for possible cemetery, one for possible subdivision/memorial chapel.  And another one for subdivision,

There is 5 hectare in Taytay untitled for subdivision. <Today I was informed of a 1.5 hectare near an existing subdivision>  Well that is lot for the next 3 years or next 20 years

I also do long bike rides on weekends. I rode to Tagaytay last Feb 24, 2013

I also rode to Baguio City from Angono, Rizal last January 25, 2013. Can you beat that?

What is the distinction among these terms?

APS, Entrep Class, PHL     February 2013

I asked the students to distinguish these terms:

INNOVATION

INVENTION

CREATION

IMITATION

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Aren't they very confusing?  The class discussion reveals..

Atheist Billionaires - from the MBAH 10B Special Reports

Rm 210, APS Building, Rockwell, Makati City | February 23, 2013

Atheist/agnostic billionaires

If they do not believe in God, why could they be so rich?

Good guys do not become billionaires?

                                     Dr. Tim emphasizing an idea

Dr. Tim in his special report on Business Bible made rather startling observation ie, that some of the billionaires did not exactly believe in God/Bible.  Some of them:   Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates.  Bill Gates is an atheist.

Thus the question raised in the special report by Dr. Tim is do you need the Bible to be rich?   The answer from the limited examples mentioned is a resounding No.  But Dr. Tim was quick to point out that these billionaires may actually believe in the same principles mentioned in the Bible.  Or the devil may be tempting or testing them  (He got this from the Bible)

Meet a few rich atheists

Generous atheists billionaires

Earlier, a post was made on drop out billionaires (is the MBA necessary?)

Other special reports were on:    Aravind hospital by Dra Ching.   Can we do low cost, high volume operations a la Jollibee for some medical care/services as Aravind hospital in the PHL. For eyecare, cataract, this may be no longer feasible because blindness incidence has been reduced in the PHL by as much as 50%

Dra Anjanette reported on "The World is Flat"  She said that it is rather odd that she reported on this because she is not very computer literate.  ( It is a way for her to study more on the computer and to motivate her further?)

MBAH Case Analysis of Victoria Court

Rm 210, APS Building, Rockwell, Makati City PHL |February 23, 2013

Dr Abel and Bong V leading the class in case analysis of Victoria Court

"This was according to the friend of the friend of the friend of my friend"  - the original quote/attribution of the day.

I like the case because of the laughter and the naughty discussions (experiential?) that sometimes ensues.  And sometimes reveal much about the students.

Much of the class though look very conservative.  One said she would not buy the thematic rooms/appreciate the repositioning efforts of the Kings.  The structure location, branding, brand equity of the motel are not consistent with the intent of the repositioning efforts.  One was frank enough to admit that she went with her husband to one while trying to make their first baby

This was the usual qualifier  of the statements of the MBAH students as the case analysis went on.  The case analysis today was led by Dr. A Villamayor and Fr. Bong Villamor.  The arrangement opened up the case analysis to more analysis.  However, those not sticking to the case facts had to qualify their statements with the quote of the day.

Deo, Drs Thea and Jeff made significant contribution to the case analysis. Deo and Thea noted that what the Kings actually executed was an innovation in the motel business, but not real repositioning or rebranding ie from motel to hotel.  It was about making more money and more value added for the establishment.

Dr. Afable said he participated in the the team who treated Angelo King in a hospital run by priests, the patriarch of the motel group mentioned in the case.  He said that the board and lodging operations of the hospital he head in Batangas.  I commented that I might see apartelle (an aka for motels too) named "Affables" in Batangas someday?

"That is according to my friend"  -  Laughter

Roslyn took the lion's share of the case analysis;  Dra Janice takes over

Business and the Bible

The Bible is a management and wealth book.  Contrary to popular beliefs, the Bible is not anti business. If you read the
Bible and follow all its teachings and admonition, you will become a successful manager and businessman.  Yesterday at the Sentrep class, we had a report by Alvin on Business and the Bible.

Kevin and JP did well as Victoria Court Gurus

Entrep Class, AGSB, H de la Costa Campus | February 19, 2012

Kevin and JP were assigned as as the panelists to lead the class in Victoria Case Analysis.  They seemed to have prepared well for this as they touched on the key relevant points of the case.  I always noticed that the class were more open to discussion if classmates were the case facilitator.

The key points mentioned were:  rebranding, repositioning, brand equity, feasibility of other alternatives, PTM.

Joseph noted that the change would have been complete if there were total overhaul of the structures.  Evan noted that a brand equity can not be abandoned because there was money and value in it.

It was a very satisfactory and very much improved case analysis.

I told the panelists earlier in the class that they must train to be future  GSB professors to which I think they positively responded.  (JP even wore an expensive suit)

AGSB to be under the School of Business at Loyola?

Makati City, Philippines   | February 17, 2013

One of the concerns/fears for the forthcoming change at AGSB is that it will be under the Loyola Schools, and that AGSB will be under the Dean from Loyola.

First, we expect this to happen because the President announced at Canyon cove that there will be changes.

This arrangement, having all business schools, graduate and undergraduate is common in all schools:  HBS, San Diego, etc.  It makes for efficiency and more business for the school.  The faculty for undergraduate and graduate would be one;  there are common customers -  those who are first time in business management learning those who want more.  And then you have only one Dean managing the two schools instead of having two.

We teach about change and business reorganization, downsizing and we the business professors must be the first to embrace this.

What pisses you off at the school list getting longer and unacted upon

One of the NU 12 topics required of the Entrep students is what pisses them off:  at the mall, at the neighborhood, office.  Creativity is driven when there is a problem, or adversity.  After all, a new product is a new solution to a problem.

Among those that are reported are those that piss them off the school. I ask the student to disguise their names so as not to offend anyone.  They are graded accordingly but the list gets longer and the inaction remains. The posts/publications are not read.   This means this is just an academic exercise and good management is just words at MBA.

I brought the complaints to those who can act on them and to no avail.  The cap ex, structural problem is apparently being controlled by those who do not see/or aware of the problem.  So much for creativity and change lessons

Next case analysis is Victoria Court

The next case analysis is Victoria court and this is fun.  The panel led by some of our male students will conduct the case analysis as I grade the class on their recitation/critical thinking.

I was interviewed, incidentally by Rappler on the same topic.  The case analysis last June 27, 2012 which was a class led analysis, showed up at Google and Rappler picked up that story.

Since Valentine is very recent, the case is very timely and relevant

How I wish we had time for entrep tour at Cebu or Vietnam?

AGSB, H de la Costa Campus, Salcedo, Makati City, PHL   |  February 12, 2013

Our schedules for  next  sessions:

February 19, 2013  -  Continue PDQ and Micromarket Analysis,  Case Analysis:  Victoria Court

February 26, 2013 -   SR, Continue PDQ if did not finish on February 19,  Jeopardy.   Evan and Athens, by virtue of being full time students were volunteered to formulate the questions coming from ProfJorge slideshare (those discussed in class and those posted in the ProfJorge@Ateneo blog) and Special Reports.

Next session:  February 23 or March 1, 2013  Food trip to Quiapo or Binondo.  Somebody say Lea or Athens must make prior food trip and lead us to the food stops that we will make.  They will tell us how much money to prepare, the meeting place and the  itinerary.  The students must make an observation report though on what they learned from the trip. Is this OK for everyone?

N.B.   The syllabus schedule stays put even if there additional schedules being posted by me or class sec.

How I wish we can make national entrepreneurship, or international entrep/business part of the syllabus.  We can go to hot bed of entrepreneurship like Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, or locally Cebu. May be next term....Does everybody have a passport?

Comment:  It was proposed that we go to Thailand for MBAH 10B.  However, I am not available at the said date, and I found out that I have to amend the syllabus before that activity can be done.  Sorry

The Case for Case Analysis

H de la Costa Campus, Salcedo, Makati City PHL  |  February 12, 2013

We had the second oral, individual only case analysis (not case discussion -  it could not be a narration).  Before, I disregarded case analysis in the entrep class;  it is a heavy stuff.  It calls for heavy listening, alertness, thinking and preparation.  As the facilitator, you think as hard as your student and you must be able to keep track of the thread of the analysis to clarify issues.

All the while, I thought that students who enroll in Entrepreneurship, after having undergone various functional areas training should be able to breeze a case analysis.

Some notes:

l.  It is not a narration or recitation of facts.  The student must take a point of view, a hypotheses and gather only or recite only the relevant facts.

2.  Focus on the situation and hypothesize a problem;  test whether that is really a problem;  go to the alternative and solution.  Mentally test the solution  -  is it realistic, is it good for everyone concerned.?  Is it the best under the situation -  the time constraints.  The problem should be tested  against objectives  - sales income, financial (ROI, efficiency, turn over etc)

3.  So it is always SPADA:   situation, problem analysis, alternative and decision (the solution)

4.  Focus on the big picture:  do not focus on the trunk, the legs or the ear of the elephant.  Look at the entire elephant.  Be systems oriented (what are the parts of the system? Read Breakthrough Thinking by Hibino and Nadler)  Your long training on marketing, finance, or HR can make you myopic.   Or focus on the bottom line (what is the bottom line)

5.  Debate and contrasts (from other students analysis) enables the student to compare his thinking and his ability vs. his classmates.

6.  Insights come out during the analysis. Therefore, when students raise their hands and are eager to recite and talk there are Eurekas and moments of insights lighting a hundred lightbulbs in their brains

This is a step further in becoming a master...MBA, a guru

How To Get Massive Free Traffic From The Top 10 Social Bookmarking Sites

Do you have a business?  But it does not have traffic?

Do you have a website, or a blog?  It is nice looking but nobody knows about it?

How do you get people to know it?  How do you drive people to your site?  When is the best time to post (It is usually Monday and Friday and from 8 to 10 pm)

Some people say there is dollar in social media and blogs.   Hah?   If you enroll in adsense, you get only 3 cents a click.  And they are very strict.  The best blogger I know did not pass the Adsense standard.  If you can get 100 visits a day, you are very good blogger... It takes a lot of practice and hard work.... And improving your posts and website.

Issue # 163 - February 8, 2013
Hi Jorge,

One of the biggest trends on the Internet today is the growth of social bookmarking sites such as Twitter, Pinterest, and Reddit.

Social bookmarking sites allow you to share interesting stories and pictures with friends and family, the opportunity to like each other's pages, comments, or articles, and much more. As a result, many social bookmarking sites get a ton of traffic.

Wouldn't it be great if you could use all of this traffic to your advantage for your business? Well, the good news is that you can.

In today's Main Essay, I walk you through the exact type of content to submit to social bookmarking sites so you can gain massive amounts of free traffic to your web site or blog.

In today's Check It Out Section, you will learn how you can be paid to play around on social media sites for other businesses.

We hope you enjoy this issue of the Thriving Business Newsletter.

How To Get Massive Free Traffic From The
Top 10 Social Bookmarking Sites
By Jynell Berkshire

Social bookmarking sites allow people to easily share their favorite articles and blog posts with others. Needless to say, these sites can be a source of great free advertising for those who know how to use them correctly.

Below is an overview of some of the best known social bookmarking sites that you will want to take advantage of to get a ton of traffic for your business:

1.  Twitter - Twitter is perhaps the most famous social bookmarking site. It allows a person to use up to 140 characters for a post. A person can link to a video, audio, article, blog post, or any other URL.

2.  Pinterest - Pinterest is becoming one of the world's most popular photo sharing sites. The site has just recently allowed business entities to set up a corporate account instead of just allowing personal users. It is a good way to share photos and graphics related to one's blog topic and gets millions of unique users a month.

3.  Reddit - Reddit gets two million unique visits a day. It allows users to save bookmark links and explore related links; thus permitting users to easily see information that would not necessarily appear on Google's first page of search engine results.

4.  StumbleUpon - StumbleUpon gets ten million visits a month. It allows a user to display his or her bookmarks and easily search for related content.

5.  Buzzfeed - Buzzfeed lets a person not only share links to posts, but also photos and videos. It gets over three million visits a month and can be a very good source of traffic.

6.  Delicious - Delicious gets approximately 600,000 visits a month. While it is smaller than the sites mentioned above, it is good nonetheless, because a large audience uses it and it doesn't have all the competition you see on the other large sites.

7.  Digg - Digg gets about five million unique visitors a month. It allows users to save their bookmarks and then search for other bookmarks that offer related information.

8.  Tweetmeme - Tweetmeme is a relatively new application. It sorts through popular, relevant tweets and retweets them. The site gets anywhere from 700,000 to 2.4 million visits a month and is ideal for those who want traffic from Twitter's web site.

9.  Slashdot - Slashdot gets over 200,000 users a month. It allows a user to easily save bookmarks and publish good content.

10.  Fark - Fark gets over 400,000 users a month. It is an easy to use social bookmarking service that enables a person to submit links quickly and easily.

If you want to get massive free traffic from social bookmarking services, then below are seven steps you can follow for your business. While each bookmarking service is different, these tips apply no matter which service or services a person intends to use.

Step 1 - Provide Fresh, Relevant, Good Quality Content

Your content should be interesting, helpful to users, and be written using proper grammar and spelling. The ideas and concepts presented in the article must also be current.  Things that would be considered old news do not tend to perform as well on social bookmarking sites.

Step 2 - Write Great Headlines

Most people are busy and do not have the time to read articles that look "just a little bit interesting." The headline has to grab a person and make them want to find out what the article says. Headlines related to curiosity, that ask a question, or cover "how to..." or "Three/Ten/Five best..." are often good attention grabbers.

Step 3 - Write a Catchy Article Description

Bookmarking sites require a person to write a short description. This description should be catchy and make a person want to find out more. It should also contain the main keyword that a person is trying to get traffic for.

Step 4 - Make the Opening Paragraph Interesting

Getting a person to start reading an article is good, but the end goal is to entice a person to read the entire article. Creating a good opening paragraph does this. The paragraph should tell what the article is about without providing all the information given in the article itself.

Step 5 - Assign the Right Tags and Categories to Your Article

Bookmarking services such as Pinterest, Reddit, and StumbleUpon require a person to tag and categorize the article, photo, or blog post. It is important to add relevant categories and tags, based upon what the article is actually about.

Step 6 - Submit the Article at the Best Time of Day

Content is like hot chocolate - it is best piping hot. Most people want to read content when it is brand new. For this reason, it is best to post the content at the time of day when people are online.

Step 7 - Get Help from Friends and Other Social Bookmarkers

Try to get positive votes on the article, photo, or post as soon as possible. Ask friends, relatives, or even other social bookmarkers for a positive vote in the first few hours after posting the content. Quick favorable votes help to boost the article's status, making it easier to find and more likely to generate traffic.

Getting traffic from social bookmarking sites takes effort and lots of hard work. However, these sites can be an excellent source of traffic generation for your business. If you really enjoy social media and want to learn how you can get paid to play around on social media sites for other businesses, then check this out.

Your Thriving Business Assignment

If you want free traffic from social bookmarking sites for your business, below are seven steps you can follow:

1.  Provide content that is fresh and very well written.

2.  Write a catchy headline that grabs the reader's attention to make them want to read more of your content.

3.  Write a catchy article description that is to the point to keep your reader's attention.

4.  Make the first paragraph of your article as interesting as you can to entice the reader to read your entire content.

5.  Assign the right tags and categories to your article to properly bookmark it based upon what the article is about.

6.  Submit your article at the best time of the day when you know people are going to be online to read it.

7.  Ask your friends, family, and other social bookmarkers for a positive vote on your article within a few hours after you post it on a social bookmarking site.

Check It Out!

There are incredible opportunities to make money by playing around on social media sites for other businesses.

As a social media consultant, you get paid to do things like:

  • set up Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest sites for your clients
  • come up with fun and interesting things to post each day for your clients (and this can be automated so you don't personally have to upload them each day)
  • run social media contests and promotions for your clients
  • interact with other people on social networks
Doesn't that sound like fun?
