Award to Trizza for winning last week's debate

AGSB, H de la Costa Campus, Makati City Philippines   |  December 16, 2013

It is nine days before Christmas, start of simbang gabi.  We still had classes for the Sentrep in H de la Costa campus.  of the 9 students only 4 attended and this included the new enrolee, Grace Agustin.  Those who came were Carlo, Rocky and Trizza.  We merely discussed the hand out for strategic planning and I lectured on my background as entrepreneur and professor, and on business planning.

Grace Agustin correctly guessed why Trizza singlehandedly won he debate.  It was because 3 siya...

Our Spentrep Class Last December 9, 2013

AGSB, H de la Costa campus,  December 16, 2013

Tonight, we will have our 2nd session for Spentrep Class in H de la Costa. There were only 8 and is in danger of being scrapped because 8 is the Break Even number  I have been told that there was one additional enrolee.  And is just one short of being considered sustainable.

There were 8 enrolees and only 6 attended.

We walked through the syllabus and we went through some lectures at the slideshare.  And we had a debate:  Entrepreneurs Born Made or product of serendipity or opporutnity.  Trizzia, the lone defender for the made won the debate as per Rocky, the class leader for the debate. It is unfortunate that I was not able to post at once.  I could not find the pictures I took (the camera has senior moments!)

Why did Trizzia win because "3 siya"  Hahaha

Who enrolled in the class:   Zordialine, Francis, Trizza, Rocky, Cristhel, Pamela Ann (a) Carlo Senica and Jennifer (a) Thanks for enrolling;  it is going to be hard

Teaching Assignment for MBA AGSB-University of Iloilo Program

Iloilo City, Philippines December 14, 2013

Terence was the masterful Presiding Officer of the debate

I was given a teaching assignment for MBA Regis Program at University of Iloilo by Ms. Bigette Vinuya.  Our academic coordinator there was Ms. Carmen Dabao, and the student for entrepreneuship there would be the first batch for MBA:  Terence, Pam, Christian, Joevic, Ramey and Jan.

I said that they need MBA only for the certification.  Joevic is a NSM of Jardine Davies,  Christian family's AM Builders have several (dozens of stores all ready)  Terence business include sugar central, importation of soya, livestock, sustainable livestock, and flour,   Ramey if Coke plant manager, and the family of Jan is into pharmaceutical.   We just need to facilitate the sharing

And so I flew in from Manila and the plane was delayed for two hours last Friday December 13, 2013.  Since I could not find the hotel booked for me, Circle Inn, I stayed at Riverside Inn, where I usually stay for my Iloilo visit.  It is cheap (only P500.00 per night after senior citizen discount,) and very accessible.

I taught the following day. The assignments were explained we would catch up next session.  We only have 3 remaining days session:   Jan 15, February 1 and 8

I found out that three of the students business were hard hit by Yolanda:  AM builders of Christian, the sugar central of Terrence, and the cock farms of Joevic. They welcome donations

The classroom did not have a PC or computer:  only a projector.  We were used to the support given to the faculty at AGSB

We had a lunch though at Chicken Inasal.

Our major activities were:   the walk through of the syllabus, the debate and the group presentation of Illegal Activities.  We had fun in the debate and the illegal activity and practiced a lot of critical thinking.    Terence though deftly handled Joevic who constantly asked questions;  he was entitled to only one question.

What must the business concept do for your customer, your stakeholders, and investors?

Rizal, Philippines  December 8, 2013

Today is the feast of Immaculate Concepcion.  Rejoice

As we prepare our business plans, it is important that at the start,  the business concept must be (as I have repeated several times in class)

1.  Compelling

2.  Unique

3.  Differentiated.

A former student uses the word "mesmerize"

In the words of Seith Godin:   A purple cow.   Or if you want to be complicated, a business in a "blue ocean"

Guy Kawasaki  calls it "Enchantment"

Then you must have a 3 word tag/title for the business concept as you pre accelerate your business concept.  Getting into an accelerator program

Are you following/benchmarking these, as you do your draft of the business plan?

You must enchant if your start up must come alive!

Ateneo, Philippines   December 7, 2013

From First Round

Is Enchanted Kingdom enchanting?  Is it having near death experiences too.  Guy Kawasaki writes that Apple, early on had near death experience.  But escaped death because it had enchanting product - the Aldus Pagemaker.  The Aldus Pagemaker had the ability to enchant customers that it brought back a company life.  JB Borromeo often uses the word "mesmerize"  I like the idea of being "compelling or irrestible"

Can being enchanting learned.  Kawasaki likes to think so.

Some ideas:

1.  Make them like you.  Dress well, learn the proper handshake, open yourself to the possibility of yes Yes you will help them.

2.  Default with great product -  with support, manuals, tutorials.  Others:  completeness, intelligence, empowerment.  Explain your product in three words.

3.  Do a pre mortem not a post mortem  -  Anticipate what you must do in order not die.  You cant do much when your product has died.

How to be enchanting with your boss:

1.  When he asks you do something, drop everything and do it (not your underwear though)

2.  Prototype early;

3.  Give bad news early

Reports:

1.  MAP  - Mastery, Autonomy Purpose

2.  Dont ask your people to do anything you would not do.

Getting into a start up accelerator (or test your business idea in a tiangge)

December 7, 2013

These are tips for start ups wanting to join the accelerator program.  These are new terms for me and I am playing catch up.

Start ups are collaborative incubators that help you develop your product, sell it, and find investors.  There are hundreds in USA, but getting into these is challenging.  So it is good to have pre accelerators

The post here are advice coming from Seedcamp and Oxygen Accelerators.

Some tips (taking part in pre accelerator)

1.  Explain your idea in simple terms

2.  KISS (keep it short and sweet)

3.  Be original

4.  Show that your business has traction Read the other tips.

For me the accelerators in the Philippines would be the tiangge/viajeros.  I have talked to one of their leaders and really they have great ideas, and had mentored many entrepreneurs.  I am taking great interest in handling tiangges, tiangge malls because it helps a great deal of entrepreneurs, and you develop a lot of networks, and money too.

It is a brutal test.  And a rewarding place to be if you can sell and have a lot of followers/customers

Song for Mary Ateneo Hymn

Rizal, Philippines  |   December 6, 2013

On December 8, 2013, we celebrate the Mama Mary's Immaculate Conceptcion;   last November 25, we forgot the last and a very important part of the celebration of night with the entrepreneurs: the playing of the Ateneno hymn graduation song.  I am posting a you tube video of the song:  (for make up purposes and to remind our Sentrep students to:    1.  strive to be graduates   2.  to be aware that they stand between the earth and sky:   reality of a cruel and lying world   and idealism taught by the Lord and the Jesuits)  And that will our struggle in the world, as we manage the world of power and wealth, as MBA:
