Factors Paper by Carlo Senica

Factors Paper by Carlo Senica
SPENTREP - S09
As I do self-assessment on the factors that I have & don't have to be a business entrepreneur, I come up with the following list:

Factors that I think I have to be a business entrepreneur:
1.       Attitude & Willingness to take action = Taking an MBA degree, staying up late to do assignments and prepare for exams, and learning new things are my first steps of being an entrepreneur. I think this attitude building will help me progress as I pursue my dream of being an entrepreneur someday.
2.       Motivation = I have this strong self-motivation that I'll have my own business at the age of 35 – 40yrs (the earlier, the better, but I'm not rushing things). In fact, I already claimed it as I wrote it in my long term personal achievement plan 3 years ago. As part of my motivation as of to-date, I already achieve some of my short term personal plans and other mid-term personal plans are on its way.
3.       Knowledge = Everything can be learned if you have the right attitude and pushed by your strong motivation.
4.       Financials = Money is not a problem as every businessman says. Because You can apply for a loan to start your business or You can either seek for investor/s to finance your business. I think what important is, how you manage the money wisely.
Factors that I think I don't have to be a business entrepreneur:
1.       Family background = I didn't came from a family of businessman; I was raised by a Filipino mentality to study well to get a good paying job paired with good benefits. Now that I've achieved that, it's time for me to raise the bar in our family and start in a new endeavor by having my own business.
2.       Experience = As an old adage says, Your personal experience is your best teacher. In this criterion, I totally have a zero experience with regards to managing own/family business. What I've is, a diversified working experience as an employee which I think I can bank on someday as I put my own.
3.       Creativity = In this criteria, I think & feel that I'm not that creative or simply lack creativity to be unique. What I can do now, is to continuously practice thinking new ideas and/or improving existing ones.
4.       Self – confidence = With lack of experience, creativity, and family background; this holds me from being confident that I can be a successful entrepreneur. But I believe as I jump into having my own business, I'll learn and confidence will eventually build-up. <pls see the work of Trizza Castro and benchmark>

Factors Paper by Trizza Rushel V. Castro

What factors I do / don't posses that make / do not make me a Business Entrep (not more than 3 pages). You can do a self assessment available from the internet. Do a thorough self analysis.
Before writing this paper, I tried a self assessment test in the Internet for readiness on becoming an Entrepreneur. This is the result:
50 Item Entrepreneuralism Questionnaire Results

The link used is http://www.psychometrictest.org.uk/entrepreneur-test/. Achievement Striving is a person's internal motivation to achieve outstanding results and their propensity to work hard towards goals. Industriousness is a person's level of persistence, resistance to stress and self discipline. Passion refers to an individual's emotional intensity, enthusiasm and emotion-based decision making. Taking control is related to the psychological theory of "locus of control", the extent to which individuals believe they can control events that affect them. Creativeness is the use of imagination to develop and implement original and innovative ideas.
At a very young age, I was already exposed to businesses and entrepreneurs. My parents owned a "Carinderia" when was a kid, we also experienced a franchise of Triumph (a lingerie shop), and now, at present my father is managing a closed lending corporation. My mom, on the other hand, is presently working with the Department of Trade and Industry and they routinely organize trade fairs (where new products are introduced). From there, I had the chance to be involved in their activities and I was amazed of the new ideas created. In college, I took up Business Administration, obviously also exposed to trade fairs and other business activities. It goes to show that in terms of knowledge and awareness, I am somehow trained and experienced to be an entrepreneur.
Surprisingly, I possess some attitudes and habits that entrepreneurs have. Maybe because of the exposure I had when I was still a kid. I love discovering new things and when someone would come up to me and share an idea, I become proud and excited on how it will realizably turn out-the feature and purpose. From then on, I feel that I am always curious and in search for discovery.
I am a leader and that means I need to direct but I also need to follow. I also need to follow my subordinates because they too can create new ideas or new ways that can attain our goals. I am a follower. I don't mind working with someone else besides, it will be more helpful for me because someone is there to support and criticize my work. Through that person, I will gain more knowledge and experiences. I will learn something new.
I am not afraid to take risks and I like to have that feeling of being challenged in taking new projects or overcoming problems. "If you will not act now, when will be the right time?" What if that opportunity passed?
I can handle stress and I also like cramming. I can still work effectively even in stressful situations especially if there are only few hours left before deadline.
When problems arise, I believe that there are other alternatives or if not, there will always be a contingency plan. I see good solutions in every problem. Everything is possible.
As a person, I want to be recognized on what I have done well. I want to be appreciated. Most of the time, people only criticize your wrong ways and decisions. Sometimes, I become more motivated if people also criticize the good work I have done.
For me, action is very important. No matter what people say I always find a way to prove that my ideas make sense. I become persistent. The action must be executed well.
I have the capability of imagining things and how I can make it work. Most of the time, I am already owning the situation because I am confident enough that the situation will turn out the way I imagined it to be.
I always give my best and my full confidence on a certain project given to me especially if its in my area of competency but if I failed, I will look at is as an opportunity to improve or learn. Like an artist said "Failure is only the opportunity again, only this time, more wisely"
Leading people is not easy especially in motivating them to do the action but the important thing is the effort I make in giving them the motivation they need.
People know that change is the only constant thing in this world. I am a person who is open to change and if I need to make sacrifices for that change, I will be ready. In the business world, everything is fast pace and I should be part of that fast ride.
It is okay to be ambitious and I am proud to be one. I am hungry for something new-innovation, new ideas, new discoveries. This ambition will remain an ambition if I will not find a way to achieve it. And I must achieve in the right and ethical way. 3.5

Comments on the Business Plans submitted by previous Spentrep Class

Rizal  Philippines   | January 24, 2014

I am just about to complete checking the Business Plan submitted by the MM and Spentrep class last semester, some 50 calendar days ago.  They were supposed to submit this last January 10, 2014 which was 45 calendar days after the semester ended.

I know that we need to develop this skills among our MBAs especially those are taking Entrep as elective subject.  A BP is a guide on how to start and run your start up well.  (Although the trend now with other quarters are to:   1.  come out with the business model as your guide/dashboard 2. and for lean start up to come up with MVP  -  minimum viable product at once and test it - at once. Rapid prototyping, having  a product is very important if you are to race to the market place and be the market leader, and rake in the profits.

Some salient points:

1.  The Business Plan is 25 points of the total grade.  It is the final exam, the convergence of all the learning for the semester..  This is where we apply the lectures, the cases, the special reports, and the slideshare presentation on BP, the group creative activities on Micromarket, the PDQ.

2.  The BP format as prescribed has to be followed and not less than 40 pages as specified in the syllabus.  Before, if the paper does not follow the format or is less than 40 pages, it gets a 1.  This quarter is more forgiving.

3.  Be sure:  there is a table of contents and executive summary.  The organization the offerings are not mentioned at the bottom but are important nevertheless

4.  At the concept, as part of the learning on lean start up, you must have 3 word tag for your business.  It should be catchy and denote your business that is MAGIC, UNIQUE, DIFFERENTIATED, MESMERIZING, SEDUCTIVE, MAGNET, ENCHANTING, A WOW BUSINESS.

4.  The salient points to be graded are:

     1. Business concept and model  10%

Concept  -  50 words or less that describes the business:  the product, benefits, the PTM, and the location, and even positioning.  We did a lot of exercises on this on group creative activities and impromptu exercises in the class

Business Model   - the BM canvass has to be used, and briefly described.   Focus on the MVP.   This is the dashboard of the business.  The BM answers a basic question -  how does the business make money.  Therefore the cents and pesos have to be specified in the cost and revenue portion of the BM.  It should not escape the eye of the student, if any of the elements of the BM can be innovated.

     2.  Business objectives  10%  VMO KRAPI

Hand outs have been given at the start of the semester and they must be followed.  After going through the FS, the student goes back to the SMART objectives and the KRAPI

Most students forget the job generation part;  we have to remember the Ateneo Nation Building motto.  How do you contribute to nation building

   3.  The Product     10%

        1.  What are the customer wants and needs being satisfied;

       2.  What are the demographics and psychographics of the PTM

      3.  What are the features?  What are the benefits?

      4.  Competitive analysis  ( on many fronts, the product, the company, distribution, ads, promo, special deals, SWOT if you may)

      5. Alpha and beta testing

      For the lean start ups:

      1.  You need the prototype, the Minimum Viable Product

      2.  The 3 word tag to capture the imagination of the prospects

      Surprisingly, many miss this out.

4.  Market estimate:  20%

The outcome of this portion is to make an intelligent guess estimate of the the sales.  Where do you base your sales..

The case for this is  Pranav,   The group creative activity is micromarket

The macro and micro analysis (which includes the traffic count and analysis of sales of similar establishments in the same service or catchment area)  Unfortunately, many stop at the micromarket and fail to make a jump to the sales estimate

This is the proving  portion, after having studied your product, the customer, and the competition, you can sell this much.  This ME portion supports the Financial.  Will you have enough volume to break even?

Is the risk worth taking because you have enough buyers.

Will you do a pilot or market test?  Did you do an FGD?

5.  EDS  20%

Enterprise Delivery System;  this portion was taken in MICO.  This is SPATRES mentioned in the handout by Morato on Strategtic Planning.

This is is SPATRES:  Strategy, Program (Projects) Activities, Tasks, and Resources

This is ITO:  INput Throughputs, and Outputs, Matching and Outcomes

Inputs:      4M:  materials, money, materials machinery

Throughputs:    activities, projects, programs, Job Descriptions, business process and improvements:;  job descriptions, controls, manuals

  Outputs:   Products and services

Matching:   4ps of marketing.  The products and services must match the Customer Wants and Needs.

Outcomes:  The business objectives mentioned in the first part of the BP.

HOW DO THE OBJECTIVES CONNECT WITH THE KEY ACTIVITES AND RESOURCES (This is the strategy portion.)

You must be able to discuss this in great detail;  and it could not be less than 40 pages.  Please do not submit that contains a one page infographic.

6.  Financials:  20%

It must contain at least 3 elements:

   1.  Cash flow

   2.  Profit and Loss

   3.  Balance Sheet

This office tries to furnish the student with spreadsheet template (Excel on how to do this easily)  Most have built in ratio.  You must know how the thing works, not necessarily how to do the Excel.  The student must understand how this connects with the objective, key resources and activities.

7.  Compliance with the regulators: 5%

You must conform to the local national, and even international regulations.  And may include ISO accreditation.   Discuss how you are going to comply.  Will you be a good citizen?  Will you pay the correct the taxes?  How will you deal with difficulties with regulators:  with corruption and facilitation?

8.  Exit strategy:    5%

This refers to two business situations:

When things get bad:  how to bail out?  How do you liquidate, what are your contingencies to lessen your loss?  What are the red flags?  What are the thresholds for bailing out?

When business is good and is profitable:

Plans for succession, IPO, selling for profit? How do you add, multiply, subtract, or divide?

Unfortunately many students neglect this and get nothing as a grade for this.  Please pay attention on this section

Please follow this format.  Please see my slides on BP at slideshare on BP preparation

N.B.

1.  The BP should be 40 pages or more.  When you do your EDS well and thoroughly, it could be more than 40 pages, just for EDS

2.  Have a table of contents.   (You do that for strama)

3.  Have an executive summary, although you write this last

For the last term, 3 students got a grade of 1 for the following reasons:   their BP were less than 40 pages as specified;  they did not contain the  above mentioned parts, did not have enough data and details to prove that the business is viable, and can be operated; and were badly written.  Some were cut and paste afffair, which is a  bad practice for somebody who will soon be called a Master of BA

Factors Pape by Ramey S. Clavecillas AGSB Iloilo

Factor Paper
Date:  January 11, 2014
Name:  Ramey S. Clavecillas
Course: Entrepreneurship AGSB –Iloilo

Based on the Trilogy of Entrepreneurship, by Dr. Eduardo A. Murato Jr, a complete entrepreneur must possess the following traits;
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Originator
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Inspirer
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Organizer
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Implementor
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Operator
<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Innovator
On a personal note, I believe I could very well relate on this model. From my 15 long years in a corporate life, I could say that I have honed these qualities acquired through the years both formal and informal learning process. Each items narrated above are the building blocks that made my way through my current status in our company.  However, I do feel that I can’t call myself as an Entrepreneur!.... It’s quite odd but it’s real.
To appease my mind, I further went through on the reference to understand what Entrepreneur really is. In my surprise, there is a term called Intrapreneur! Then I made an instant connection because Intrapreneur is what do and fits for myself being employed and in corporate business. It means that behaving or acting like an entrepreneur while working in a larger organization.
This realization actually gave me a sense of hope that from the learnings and experience acquired from my day to day job, the very foundation of being an entrepreneur is already within reach. It’s now becoming a challenge for myself on how I can come out of the box, may not be necessarily getting out of my current job, but to explore the opportunities outside. At this point, I feel that the future is very exciting and promising in order for me to attain my goal and aspirations in life.

Factors Paper by Grace Agustin

Factors Paper by Grace Agustin
January 14, 2014

Listed below are some of the factors of a successful entrepreneur, to be successful does not mean to have all these qualities but rather a combination of these can help build and grow a successful business.
Factors I do possess to be a Business Entrepreneur:
a.    Knowledge.  It can be taught and learned.  An entrepreneur has to have knowledge on business issues for business they start.  I may not have the knowledge right now but I think through researching, reading, and listening to successful entrepreneurs will surely give me some ideas and insights.
b.    Intelligence.  Intelligent enough to manage all possible situations and be able to give right solutions on the problem.
c.    Patience & persistence.  There are things that cannot be done perfectly on the first try.  I am patient to try it again and not to easily give up on something.
d.    Teamwork.  I can be a good player in a group.  An entrepreneur not only can lead others but also a team player to achieve success in the business.  An entrepreneur cannot do all the works alone; he/she will need somebody to achieve something.
e.    Self-confidence.  Self-confidence to start and manage my own business.
f.     Calculated risk.  Any business and endeavor has a risk, but having enough knowledge, study, preparation, plan and proper implementation. A risky business can become a calculated risk.
g.    Honesty and Integrity.  In doing business, profit is not everything.  We must consider that in doing so, we are not abusing anybody.  We were able to deliver what are the right and ethical business standards.
h.    Luck.  Luck really is not a real factor to be an entrepreneur.  But it's a real luck that we are "lucky" having the right situation in a right place in a right time.  For me it's not luck but I call it "favor", given that the intention is good through prayers luck can be a favor.  I remember somebody saying that "Work as hard as you can as if there is no God" and "Pray as hard as you can as if you cannot do the work".
Factors I do not possess to be a Business Entrepreneur:
a.    Willingness to take action.  This is one of the most important factors to be an entrepreneur.  Actions are something that leads entrepreneurs to success.  It is true that it may be the most important factor but unfortunately it's the one lacking on me.  I know that being an entrepreneur; I should take action on what is in my mind.  The world today has many ideas envelope in each individuals mind, but the courage on who will do it take credit of that idea.  I am willing to take action, but I think I am afraid and lack the initiative to do it.  I have it all in my mind but I always need a push on my back in order to do it.  I think I have to improve on this factor if a wanted to be an entrepreneur.
b.    Creativity.  I don't have enough creative thoughts to be unique but I think with the help of others, the needed creativity in the business can be achieved.  If I cannot be the originator of that creativity, then get somebody to do it!
c.    Skills & Talents.  Skills I might not have right now, but skills can be acquired with time and practice.  Talent is something inborn in an entrepreneur, but sometimes talent can be replaced with right knowledge.
d.    Experience.  Experience can be an added factor to be an entrepreneur; it is something that will increase business potential energy.  Previous experiences may help in building a successful business.  I do not have entrepreneurial experiences right now; I think having or lacking of it can be both advantageous and disadvantageous as an entrepreneur.  Knowing how to position myself and being smart-aggressive is a counter of my being inexperienced.
e.    Connections.  The more connections mean the more possibilities for building a successful business.  Through socialization, networking, social networking, connections can be achieved.

The factors mentioned above are not complete, there are still more and more that needed to be a business entrepreneur.  For me the idea here is to know your strengths and weaknesses, work on it, my weaknesses might turn-out to be my strengths or the other way around.  There is no finish line on being an entrepreneur, I just have to begin on being one and then undergo the process to be an entrepreneur.

Factors Paper by Rocky Gabatin

Rocky Gabatin
SPENTREP – S09
Prof. Jorge Saguinsin, MBA

Factors Paper:
What factors I do / don't posses that make / do not make me a Business Entrep (not more than 3 pages). You can do a self assessment available from the internet. Do a thorough self analysis.

Using an online "Entrepreneur Self-Test (see Appendix)," there were 5 factors considered in order to assess my entrepreneurial potential. These were motivation, capacity related to business skills, capacity related to networking and partnership, support from family and friends, and support from the community. Out of the possible score of 100, I scored 81.25 which was considered as "High Potential." This result was not very surprising for me because I always wanted to start my own business.

In terms of motivation, I never doubted myself when it comes to putting up a business. Although there were times as I grew up that I swung back and forth between several business ideas, I was also motivated and certain to build my own business. In fact, I recall myself saying to myself and to others when I was younger that I will never be satisfied being an employee for the rest of my life. I knew that I needed something more; I knew that I can be an entrepreneur.

Under the motivation section, there was one factor in which I scored myself low—"creative." I can be honest that I am a work-in-progress in terms of creativity. I cannot cite any instance where I can say that I made a breakthrough about something. Despite this, I can recall several occurrences where I demonstrated resourcefulness; I believe that resourcefulness is part of being creative. Yet again, creativity is coming up with something out of nothing; I still have to achieve that feat for me to be confident to say that I am creative enough.

My capacity related to business skills, I believe, is adequate and is continuously improving as I mature. A huge parcel of this is attributed to my education. I can say that both my undergraduate degree in Psychology and my current pursuing of MBA are a good combination in being a good entrepreneur or businessman. After all, business is chiefly run by people (link to psychology) and tools (link to MBA). In addition, I grew fond of reading books related to both psychology and business. In a span of only 5 years, I realized that I have read a lot of leadership books to fill an entire bookshelf. Not to mention that I also have been acquiring and reading e-books regularly.

I must admit that my capacity related to networking and partnership can still be improved. I am innately an introverted person who goes out of my shell every now and then. I am not an extroverted person who is sometimes reflective. I understand that networking and partnership is crucial in any business, so I need to learn to be more comfortable dealing with people from all walks of life. My experience in middle management in my current employment gives me a good opportunity to hone this characteristic.

When it comes to support from family and friends, I can say that I have more support from my closest friends than from my family. I could say that both my parents are risk averse, so they cannot fully support me in my business ventures. However, my friends have always been pushing and motivating me to start as soon as I can because they believe that I will excel at it. I remember telling one of my friends that I am finally setting up my business this year, and he said "Bakit ngayon lang?" (Why only now?). For me, this kind of support enables me to push myself harder and work smarter as I go along.

Mind mapping at Spentrep

January 13, 2014

There are five ideas related to entrepreneurship that are rather confusing.  These are:

  • ENTREPRENEURSHIP
  • INNOVATION
  • INVENTION
  • IMITATION
  • CREATION
To make the understanding easier, I requested the Spentrep class to do a  Mind Mapping  (original source was Tony Buzan

These were the results of the mind mapping at Spentrep last January 6, 2014

What we did at AGSB University of Iloilo Campus last January 11, 2014

January 13, 2014

My second free lunch with the class;  at Punsyon in Mandurriao (near SM):  Ramey, Prof Jorge,  Pam, Christian,  Jan, Terence, and Joevic

We had the following activities at the Entrepr Class in Iloilo, (University of Iloilo campus program)

1.  Concept  for products, and businesses.  We did a rapid prototyping exercise on common products as ID, pen, and keys.

2.  Tag lines

3.  Practice:

     1.  New product concept from negative materials (trash)

     2.  Rapid prototyping .

While we exchanged the trash brought by the class, the Group of Terence, Ramey and Jan had all things set;  they had a rather remarkable non slip, reversible slip less.  (The traditional slippers really slip.)  True entrepreneurs:   flexible, resourceful yet with strong determination.  Last minute changes will not deter them.

Factors Paper by Terence S. Uygongco

Factors Paper
Entrepreneur - AGSB ILOILO

As i am pondering on how to do my factors paper, i chance upon the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) self assessment test (as recommended by the syllabus of Prof Saguinsin).  At the onset i already have an inkling of how my entrepreneur potential would be but just the same, i read the instruction and it clearly says that i cannot answer 2 or 3 for the assessment to be effective.   So i answered it as truthfully as i could…

The Assessment Results:

Motivations - i like power or control in everything i do.  I want everything to be as what i projected it to be thus my motivation factor is more on the power.  My self-sufficiency or freedom is quite low and it would seem that i cannot on my own without some interaction.

Aptitudes - my self confidence as an entrepreneur is quite low while my determination is high, it is my lack of confidence and imagination that bring down my aptitude skills.

Attitudes - My perception to act upon one's destiny is high and it means that i could take it upon myself if i want something to succeed or not.
