Victoria Court Panelists at Spentrep and Regis AGSB Clark

Rizal, Philippines  | March 31, 2014

Carlo and Francis (Pope) lead the Spentrep case analysis at Spentrep

We had Victoria Court Case analysis at AGSB Clark, and tonight at Spentrep in H de la Costa.  I like this case because of the chuckles and laughter hat goes with the case, plus the personal biases/opinion.  They are the stuff that prevent clear and critical thinking.  The situation is deceptive.  And sometimes, you notice that ladies are more knowledgeable than males on the subject matter.

The panelists for Spentrep were Francis Butiong and Carlo Senica

When you mention that is about positioning (laughter)

It is what you do inside not outside  (laughter)

Penetrating the market. (more laughter)

When you search Google, the name of the Professor is often associated with Victoria Court (as if I am the expert of founder)

Kristhel, a brand manager of a premium rhum had the class experience their product. It 40 proof wine

For Clark AGSB, the panelists were Michael Tan and Marlon Pizarro.

Carlo with Apple and Premium Rhum

Kristhel was all smiles and gave cogent comments on positioning

Time for rhum tasting;  it is a premium rhum, costs $36.00 and Kristhel is the brand manager

It is cheaper to stay in hotel and more family oriented

The panelists are calling the class and asking them to recite

                                    The Victoria Court website

How come some of my posts are already references for certain topics?

I now realize that bloggers do much to increase the content of the web. When we research some items, it turns out that our very own work are on top of the list as reference.  For instance, asI did the presentation on Vision Mission formulation, I researched on:

1.  Rose Montenegro Reyes of Makati Med (on hospital turn around)  (Prof Jorge at Ateneo)

2.  Dr. David Shetty and Narayana Hospital in India  (at cheapcures site)

my previous post were at the top of Google Search.  Wow.  Little research goes a long way.

Do these contribute to rise of AGSB ranking?  My skills as part of the faculty?

Angono, Rizal  |  Philippines   |March 29, 2014

Award for last weeks SR and FS spreadsheet presentation given to Bong

I just arrived this afternoon from a teaching stint in Clark.  It was our penultimate meeting.  Next week, which shall be dedicated to some case analysis, and PDQ, shall have as it primary feature:  night with entrepreneurs.  As we have 3 groups, there will be 3 guest entrepreneurs.  I enjoy this session as this gives me more stories about success and failures of more entrepreneurs - the real stuff of entrepreneurship.

We had IVs last night:   that of Bong, Dr. Edu, Roms, Liza (she was not prepared;  she and her staff rushed the IV!), Verman (both DLS - green guys)

and SR  -   Arlene, on Bo Sanchez.   Rophele did a report on a young 18 year old millionaire, whose apps Sumly was bought by Yahoo news.  How will this change our reading and search habits. at the net. No one will every buy business book digest;  every single one sumlied will be a digest of 400 characters or less

and case analysis of Victoria Court. Our case analysis leaders were Michael Tan and Marlon.  They did their job well.  (Marlon pala ownas a motel.  Kaya!  Liza owns and leases a motel property)

Tamarind sweets for the outstanding IV of R Ocampo last week

Prof Jorge had a new haircut

Insights into the Power/Energy Outlook in the Philippines - from the Energy Forum by Opeman

These are some of the insights I gathered from the "Empowering Juan" Forum last Monday March 24, 2014 courtesy of MM Opeman group under Prof Arguelles and from the resource persons of ERC, DOE and PCCI (who formerly ran a 400 mW) power barge:

1.  The EPIRA unbundled the power into:   Gencos, Transmission and Grid, DU (Distribution Units - Retailers like Meralco and cooperative and customers.  In other words, Napocor was  privatized. The NG is still paying the subsidized power under Napocor (when they were said to be losing at the rate of P1m/minute)  So when John Galicia asked question on govt buying into Meralco....

Spentrep Class attended the Opeman Energy Forum instead of having a class

To support the 17th Opeman forum which was about energy, our class in Spentrep decided to  attend  the forum instead of holding a class. I saw Gracey Agustin (who manned the registration for their MM class)) Gen Ursua, Rocky Gabatin, Trizha, Zordialine and Francis.

Energy is an important and significant opportunity look into.  We have dwindling fossil fuel resources;  China is blocking our potential source of cheap energy (the Scarborough shoal).  Fuel prices are on the way up because of growing scarcity.  KSA oil fields yield are on the way down, and its even investing  in solar to show how scarcity is affecting theem too.   USA claims it does not have to import oil, but its Bakken fields costs are exceeding revenues.

The Spentrep students are to submit a paper

Congratulatilons to the Opeman MM class under Prof Gus Arguelles who did the 17th Forum on Energy

 Angono, Rizal, Philippines | March 26, 2014

                                   The Opeman Cluster Professors

Congratulations to the MM Opeman Class under Prof Gus Arguelles and the Opeman cluster under Prof Ralph Ante.  It was  well attended forum and the speakers were all distinguished:  Sec Jericho Petilla of DOE, his Executive Director Patrick Aquino, a senior Officer of ERC, an ADB expatriate and senior officers from Meralco.   I understand from Gus is that the forum is a true test of project management:   organization, process, timeline, resources, marketing,  My class in entrep conducted several fora on guest entrepreneurs who included Francis Kong and Vicky Belo.  We did the social entrep forum on the l50 year of Ateneo.

BioSkins to cool building - smart idea from Sony Japan

Nikken Sekkeis Evaporative Cooling Bio skins

I saw in a TV show that Sony Japan saves a lot of electricity using Bioskins.  These are aluminum tubings wrapped around the building like bamboo slats.  Rain water is collected at rooftop and e allowed to run through the aluminum tubes.  The aluminum tubes has tiny holes that allow the tubes to breathe, allow the water the evaporate (evaporative cooling?)  It cools the building, 0 maintenance

New Leadership at AGSB -Dean Albert Buenviaje Retiring as Dean on March 31, 2014

One  week from now, Dean Albert Buenviaje would have retired, leaving AGSB with fond memories of his kindness.   Of course, Dean Albert is a protege of Dr. Alran Bengzon.

We went all on a hard stuff of "What is so Ateneo about Ateneo" and transformed AGSB from a train station to a community of educators with Ignatian spirit.

The New Dean true to the announcement at the Crimson Hotel last August  of sharing resources brought with him his team.  They are now at AGSB.  The old timers, the Bengzon and Buenviaje loyalists are concerned.

But the new Dean has not talked nor issued any pronouncement and that makes the events rather worrisome to many faculty. It has started a lot of speculations and much activity in the rumor mill  I talked to the outgoing dean and he said the new Dean will not talk out of decency because he is still in charge.

There will a be a despedida for the Dean come March 31, 2014.  I have second to the last class unfortunately

I was fortunate to converse with the outgoing Dean yesterday afternoon; he will be up to end of the month only.  He is retiring;  he was my college classmate

Prof Jorge with DOE Secretary Jericho Petilla at Empowering Juan forum of Opeman yesterday March 24, 20

Sec Jericho Petilla and Prof Jorge at the Opeman Empowering Juan Forum last night

Makati City, Philippines March 25, 2014

Several key personalities from ERC, DOE, from PCCI were the guest speakers at the Opeman Forum last night at the APS auditorium  One of them was no less than DOE Secretary Jericho Petilla, former governor   of Leyte.  He was simply engaging and very erudite about the power nd energy.

He answered well the query by a French MBA studentnwhy not go nuclear.  The over all impact would be only P0.20 kwh ( 600 megawatt capacity at P2.00/kwh) without considering the perils associaed with meltdown as in TIPPCO in Fukugshima Japan, (Japan is now going solar) and that our future energy sources shall be RE in combinationn with coal and other fossil fuel baseload.

He hinted that China is frustrating our vision for natural gas/energy self sufficiency

SMART in strategy

APS, Makati, Philippines

I was at Strama defense early this week.  It was a reoral.   The earlier paper needed a lot of rework because of the lack of understanding by the student of how the business, an insurance broker operated, as we went through the external and internal analysis.    She could not tell, or clarify as to where the Insurance Brokerage gets its customer:   from open market or from the bank.

This time she could not convince the panel, as to whether the 50% growth in sales  (her planned strategic objective) which tops at 21 billion pesos next year could be achieved.   The inputs, the thhroughputs, the outputs, the 4ms, the enterprise delivery system were not clear or some were not available/written donw

Or what is magical about the product/service that would:

1.  draw in a lot of agents;

2.  Have people buy the products/service.

It was not very SMART (specific, measureable, achievable, realistic, and time bound)

We can lessen cost of health care, cant we?

Makati, Philippines |  March 18, 2014

One of our colleagues at the faculty is undergoing hemodialysis and she spends about P70t a month, a huge financial drain which could not be supported by teaching.  Perhaps she has insurance.  Philhealth covers only 45 dialysis, as approved by DOH Sec. Ona.  She observed that some who can not afford the dialysis just die without the treatment.  They simply can not afford the cost.   Even elderly doctors who have kidney failure are experiencing this financial difficulty.   A doctor whom she saw, about 80 years old, does not want his house to be sold just to cover his dialysis expenses

But I mentioned to the good professor that in Naradhayana hospital in India, headed by Dr. Shetty, hemodialyis is only $10 per ( or roughly P450.00) The lowest priced hemo dialysis is P2,500 in the Philippines.

The colleague said it must be wonderful if:  Dr. Shetty comes to the Philippines; or that somebody in the Philippines does it.

I said I will convince a group of MDs, NGOs, and other backers just to offer this just hemodialysis for $10.00

How to prepare non chemical organic pesticide

According to Jeff and Dr Edu, this is the way to prepare organic pesticide:

5 pcs of chili

5 cloves of garlic

say 50 ml of Messy Bessy

and 1 cup of water.

Other insect killer:

1.  Katuray

2.  goldilocks

Dr Edu Tuazon - serial entrepreneur; artist, food expert, and doctor

Dr Edu Tuazon's factors paper

I can see in Dr. Tuazon a Rennaisance man - a man of many talents:   Doctor, artist, gardener, culinary expert, connoiseur, businessman, entrepreneur, organic farmer.

Just look at his interests:

1.  Organic farming;

2.  Food (cassava cakes - Ralos cassava) 30 branches and still expanding

Chinese business acumen made the billion peso mega real estate project become a reality

Rizal Philippines  |  March 16, 2014

Michael Tan, who is on audit was our host for the second business (Hausland)  a large real estate development in Angeles  City (the biggest in Angeles?).  It is a 40 hectare JV project with the Lazatin.  It total inventory of 1,400 plots would amount to about P4 billion.  Michael Tan, the VP for Marketing,  the son of a former colleague at Unilab, said that the cost to develop land was at P1t per square meter.  The house construction, finished is at P17t/sm;  and selling price would be at P30 to P35t.  House construction use interlocking panels welded and does not use post thus is faster and cheaper. Many of their materials, except the roofing, are all from China (bought direct thus resulting in tremendous cost reduction) They reserve the adjoining lots for expansion of the house later on, thus doubling the sales (bundling?)  From the costs, we can compute the GP per sm.  (It is billions too)

Focus and Integrity at GRB

Rizal Philippines    | March 16, 2014

                                        Imposing GRB facade and building

As we toured the businesses of student, we requested our host/owners officers to share us the history/kuwento about their business.  The first one to share was Ms Elizabeth Timbol, the current CEO of Guagua Rural Bank.  We visited her at her office at Korean Town, at Fil Am Friendship Highway.

She said the bank was founded by her father some 60 years ago.  They are related to the Nepomucenos who are famous politicians in Angeles and who are in power sector.  Her father are based in Guagua where land is much cheaper compared to lands in Angeles City.

I inquired if their bank is engaged in Allied Undertaking as listed in PD 71 and 72.  Only in financial undertaking like pawnshops.   Her father wants to be very focused in banking.  He wanted focus (although they have hotel and other businesses)

Their bank is in the billion sphere;  thus she can afford to say she wants to be a billionaire

Factors Paper by Roman Cruz - AGSB Clark Entrep

Good  afternoon Sir!
Sending po again my refurbished factor paper.

Thank you po!

Roms

FACTOR PAPER:
What factors I do/ don't possess that make /do not make me a Business Entrepreneur?
By: Roman M. Cruz

After our debate on the subject, “Are entrepreneurs born? Made? “Swerti” (lucky )”,  I just had a reflection into myself if for this three subject matter, where do I perfectly fit in? What do traits do I possess in order to check myself if I am suitable to be the next big thing in entrepreneurship?

In order to give myself a better view on this reflection there are two things that I did to see “within” me if I am capable of being an entrepreneur. First is I went back and reflect if there are instances in mylife where at least for once experience to involve myself in entrepreneurial activity either big or small. Secondly, in order to support my experientialreflection, I actually took a free online entrepreneur test that measures personality traits regarding on entrepreneurialism.
