When things do not work out right
I met some former entrep students and were complaining about the on line enrollment.
It seems they could not get the professor of their choice. (They would like to get the not so terror prof for Strama) on line. So they went to the campus and the concerned office.
They were requesting my help. I could not do much because these were brought up before and we spend so much resources annually to get the acts together in a faculty out of town conference.
This has been a perennial complaint in NU 12 and something must be done now to correct this - soon?

New expertise - strategic planning?
Lately I have been getting endorsements for strategic planning. It would seem odd since the subject I teach is entreprneurship.
However you will note that strategy is nothing more than achieving your goals/objectives with available resources, selecting a set of activities.
In entrepreneurship, the entrepreneur achieves his goal with nary resources and dearth of knowledge. (but plenty of sweat and ingenuity) What could be more strategic than that.
I would welcome this new endorsement from a popular social media for professionals/
I have been getting emails too to be a facilitator in strategic planning

New Teaching Assignments
I will soon be teaching a new batch of entrepreneurship students at AGSB: @Tuesday at de la Costa campus beginning November 27. 2012 and @Saturday pm for MBAH students (MDs wow this will be challenging) beginning Dec. 1, 2012
However, for the period November 25 to Dec l, I will be joining the family on a r and r trip. I will have to miss the first session.

Be shameless
This was the admonition of Atty Gerona in his entrep talk in the last day of the class.
I talked to former businessmen and entrepreneurs who did well before and now impoverished. And I asked them why they are not making comeback (it happenned to me when we divided our inheritance and the majority of sibling invoked a provision of the law which enabled them to exclude me in the corporation).
And their reason (and my reason): they are ashamed.
The key to start up and not making this: to be shameless

Land of "Higantes" (Giants)
Yesterday, we had a parade of Higantes in Angono.
Many look at this as artistic event. I have different take on this.
Being a giant means being an exceptional individual, being a no limit person, being the uncommon man. People look for the uncommon man. We look up to the hero or a leader, who is an uncommon man, unusual. They are 10 ft tall and stand above the rest.
You could be 5 ft tall only, but your influence and achievement cast a long shadow over the lands.
Are you that kind of person?
l. In Starbucks, they have the 5th rule for their employees: "Legacy. " Have you made a legacy
2. For the pencil parable, it says "Leave your mark."

The university must practice what it preaches
In many of the NU 12 ideas of the students on how the school is being run, the following comes out regularly:
l. The P200.00 fine for ids left at home. In the age of QR codes and Iphone, this is unacceptable to many students;
2. The toilet facilities;
3. The parking fee (it should be free) (Why not include in the tuition)
4. The unreliable on line enrollment;
5. No one intranet system in the school
I also noticed that when I complained on a physical plant item (a leaking flush as it wastes water) nothing came out of it.
The university management must practice good management because it is a school of management.

University education - innovator or follower?
I am a practitioner who was made a visiting, adjunct professor in a leading business school in the PHL
However, I am amazed at the age of the curriculum and/or syllabus. Some are circa 80s and when we submitted new syllabi, they were rejected. Several proposals for new course were asked but nothing came out of them. Maybe they are not popular, no takers, so no use introducing or wasting resources. But all new products undergo growth or birthing pains or even failures. How can the university be a leading edge if it lacks courage to innovate?
But knowledge and practice do change and evolve for the better. If we are left behind?
Says Warren Buffet, " If the rate of change outside exceeds the rate of change inside, the end is in sight"
In the business school, the predominant thought is still the competitive advantage of business by Michael Porter. But Michael Porter shifted all ready to CSV and coopetition.
Or Strategy. But the business model by Alex Osterwalder is the dominant thinking now. And maybe the school is slow to adapt.
We are teaching entrepreneurship and innovation is the key to survival and must be taught to colleagues and its leadership? For it to be dominant in the industry?
This post may get me into trouble?

Factors Paper by J Orbeta

ORBETA, JENNIFER IVY M. PROF. JORGE SAGUINSIN
ENTREP – S 30 JULY 2012
I
have realized recently that for the past 9 years of my life, I have
been living in a rat race. I am wandering in a world where I get orders
and obey as expected. I am trained to accept anything that corporate geniuses tell me. In short, my whole life and future depends on others.
I
took this elective because I have this overwhelming desire for learning
entrepreneurship. And I think that is one of most important trait of an
entrepreneur which is to have a big appetite for learning anything and
everything, taking a challenge head-on and
working on it relentlessly. I am also a self-starter. I know that if
something needs to be done, I should start it myself. I do not wait for
permission and approval. When I see an opportunity, I always take the
first step. Maybe this is the reason why I don't always see eye to eye
with my supervisors. I believe that opportunity should always be given
first priority.
Another
trait of entrepreneur that I possess is that I do not fear failure and
rejection. And more importantly, I do not fear the unknown. I am not
afraid to take the first dive and enjoy the first plunge. My
grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, siblings and cousins (including
me) enjoy the benefits of having a regular job with a monthly salary.
When family conversations end up to topics like crossing the bridge from
employee to entrepreneur, they show signs of uneasiness and anxiety.
This is because none of them have tried crossing the bridge. They feel
so comfortable with their good-paying jobs for so many years that they
fear taking risks. They forget how to respond to failure because they
are used to jobs where risks are toned down by frequent check and
balance. Being the risk-taker in the family, I am the first to venture
in a business. So I would like to believe that I have the entrepreneur
trait of being a risk-taker when I find opportunities.
Another
valuable trait of an entrepreneur that I think I have is DRIVE. My
drive is strong enough to maintain my motivation to succeed. Running a
business can bring you excitement but it can also wear you down. Having
to carry all the responsibilities of a new business in your own
shoulders can eventually burn out the flame of interest and thrill. This
is the reason why an entrepreneur needs strong motivation and drive to
endure and survive the slowdown. Drive also means having the emotional
stability, sociability, consideration and tactfulness.
I
also have a strong work ethic. I worked a lot of hours, even spending
weekends just to mingle with clients. A lot of times, I get home after
everybody was asleep. I yearn for contribution. I think it is important
for entrepreneurs to have this kind of trait in order to succeed. An
entrepreneur needs to be in the game all the time, taking responsibility
of his own future and the future of his subordinates. 3

Re: Pranav Case: Abi Lacuesta

Pranav Case Analysis
1. Is the problem strategic or functional? Why?
The Pranav case's problem is more on the strategic side. I believe that they have failed to study their market. They have failed to do a research on the location they were given and the behavior of the consumers who frequent the mall. This alone is a sure key to failure. Their location is far from the foot traffic where most of their competitors are located. Also, since they are targeting male customers, I believe that that alone is an indicator that the mall, a posh mall at that, is not a good place to put up a salon for men. If you would notice, people who mostly go to the malls are women and children to shop. Usually the men who go to mall are just there to accompany their family or buy something and leave after their errand is done. Their target market is only a small portion of the mall population. With an expensive space rent, this alone will eat up the sales they get from a small number of customers. This may also have functional problems like for example, when men go to a barbershop they expect to be attended by male staffs. Barbershops give the place a manly/masculine ambiance. You rarely see men go to a salon because it screams feminine from signage to interior. If you want men to enter your shop, then give the place a masculine ambiance, starting with the staffs.
2. Should they split the spa and salon?
Since, men is more frequent on availing grooming services than spa services, in my opinion, they should just focus first on the salon part and gain first loyal customers. Then if they really want to go ahead with the spa, they can offer the spa service after they have gained loyal customers.
