Nelly See -from Mom to Mall retail tycoon
The MEntrep Class of MBAH 10 B on its last session had three great entrepreneur guests: Nelly See of Pink Box, Dr. Gary Bunagan of Green Bean Organic Coffe Corp, and Raymund Arnold S Alberto of RASA Surveying
They were all great entrepreneurs who had something great to share with the entrepreneur wannabees in the class. It was too bad it was the last day of class. Each one should have at least 3 sessions with the class; but then again we had to pay them.
Nelly See did not have any power point nor notes but she was very comprehensive and very detailed on how she started her business out of desperation just to sell/get rid of P762,000 worth of hair accessories that were mistakenly ordered due to language difficulty. She said she applied to MBE. My remark was that she did not need this. She might need it for certification purposes. But the fact that she has 30 corporate store and more than 40 franchise means she does not need MBA. { Maybe ACE/MBE should give her instead a doctorate honoris causa instead)
Dr. Gary Bunagan seem to be approaching his coffee beans like a serious hobby. Still he could not leave the opthalmologist profession behind. But the amount of time and the study that he put into the green coffee beans, and the kind of expansion they had undergone: to TMC, to H2 hotels, having SPA on the second floor of a building. Having branches in Davao, exporting Cacao to Europe, giving jobs to San Isidro farmers in Isidro Davao Oriental (fortunately I saw the large cacao plantation there and Nestle purchasers told me, it is not worth their while to buy cacao from there)
RASA headed by Raymund Arnold S Alberto, brod of Bong Villamor at UP ME frat is the leader in surveying in the PHL, even employing a drone to conduct aerial survey. He has a gone a long way from just dreaming to set up his own business on the way home to Ilocos after graduation. That was his only resource: his Dream and his Passion to Achieve it.
Did the class note something very common among the three? Yes it is about innovation. New ideas daily... Nelly had to sometimes wake up her GM during the unholy hours lest she forget the new idea. Gary had to think of other opportunities to increase revenues and expand. RASA always attend conventions abroad to be abreast of leading technology. And yet we only have one new idea weekly....
Thank you guest entrepreneurs for great sharing.

What is the distinction among these terms?
APS, Entrep Class, PHL February 2013
I asked the students to distinguish these terms:
INNOVATION
INVENTION
CREATION
IMITATION
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Aren't they very confusing? The class discussion reveals..

Thinking like a designer can inspire more innovation
By Nadia Goodman at Entrepreneur.com
We could be innovative just like the late Steve Jobs if we think like a designer (Making a dent in the universe or mouthing "Be foolish just wont do). The thought came from Bill Burnett, executive director of the design center of Stanford University in California, one of the leading design schools at USA. The training that I got at Bangkok from one of their professors probably started in their school.
Some of the tips:
l. Observe the customers on how they use the product.
2. Find the right problem. For example, in the finding the right problem for infant deaths, it is not the absence of incubators, but the need for low cost incubators to transport babies from babies born in huts to the hospital (made from aluminum tin foil or ceiling insulators - reflectix materials?)
3. Brainstorm and come out with a hundred ideas/options
4. Prototype - there is no entrepreneurship/innovation unless you have a protype/working mode/ or even a mock up. The idea will just remain an idea. The prototype mock up will give a you a feedback on #1 and what must you do further to come out with the right product
How a designer mindset could make a hundred flowers bloom

Our 3rd session (actual 2nd) for MBA Sentrep - not the typical MBA class
We opened the class with you tubes rendition of Tanging Yaman.
We did the following:
l. Lecture on introduction to entrepreneurship (from this blog and slideshare link) What were emphasized: creating something new, innovation, new products, it is magic (from Walt Disney - Larry Farrel. It is creating something from practicality nothing.
2. At the mention of creating products, we did a re invention/redesign of the school id on a paired discussion. The mock up and the new id concept will be presented by next Tuesday, December l8. (Athens proposed a mini Christmas party)
3. Then we did a mind mapping of three concepts: entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity. For most, it is their first encounter of mind maps.
4. The last part was the application of 3R from green innovation: reuse, recycle, reduce. How to create new product/or product from the waste/trash at 4f of AGSB Salcedo. And they were able in 45 minutes able to come up with new notable products. The product prototypes were the actualization of mind maps.
We said entrepreneurship is not a spectators sports; it is about taking action and creating new products/services. And we did just that.
Mind/conversation mapping (concept by Tony Buzan)
The creativity group: Alvin, Jaypee and Kevin (he just came in)
Evan, Jaypee and Nelle working on innovation
The entrep mind mappers: Athens, Cams Jenlo and Arlo

University education - innovator or follower?
I am a practitioner who was made a visiting, adjunct professor in a leading business school in the PHL
However, I am amazed at the age of the curriculum and/or syllabus. Some are circa 80s and when we submitted new syllabi, they were rejected. Several proposals for new course were asked but nothing came out of them. Maybe they are not popular, no takers, so no use introducing or wasting resources. But all new products undergo growth or birthing pains or even failures. How can the university be a leading edge if it lacks courage to innovate?
But knowledge and practice do change and evolve for the better. If we are left behind?
Says Warren Buffet, " If the rate of change outside exceeds the rate of change inside, the end is in sight"
In the business school, the predominant thought is still the competitive advantage of business by Michael Porter. But Michael Porter shifted all ready to CSV and coopetition.
Or Strategy. But the business model by Alex Osterwalder is the dominant thinking now. And maybe the school is slow to adapt.
We are teaching entrepreneurship and innovation is the key to survival and must be taught to colleagues and its leadership? For it to be dominant in the industry?
This post may get me into trouble?
