Were we glad that we did not succeed in getting a CATV franchise; is the industry doomed?

Every generation needs a revolution - an entrepreneurial revolution

We were unable to get a CATV franchise in our town   Despite a feverish campaign to get the local council approve the franchise and despite that some members of the council were friends and relatives we did not get the franchise.   They gave it to somebody from another town, who promptly sold the franchise to another party. Some of the members, somebody who bore our middle name, being a lineman at a telco, removed some of the cables.   We incurred a half million loss from the misadventure.      From what I know there was no working CATV in our town.

Now a telco is bundling their offering with a cable TV package. They call this OTT - over the top services  Woe unto somebody who has a cable TV franchise.    The news article predicited the end of the cable TV industry as we know it

Biz Buzz learned that Uy is now in the final stages of designing a new service offering that will bundle most, if not all, of the channels currently available on cable TV with the internet service of every single Converge subscriber.

More importantly, the service will come at no additional fee for the subscriber as the cost of carrying all those channels will be tucked into the existing subscription fee.

Uy recently made waves by giving subscribers free speed upgrades, with some seeing their internet speeds rise by a factor of ten for the same price. The addition of OTT services that allow one to watch their favorite channels for free— instead of subscribing to cable TV services, whether wired or delivered via satellite dish— will make Converge an even more compelling service.

Their losses could be huge     The immediate effect would be loss of new subscribers, and then non renewal of subscription

Were we glad we are not into this business anymore.

Its challenging to be optimistic in 2023

Every generation needs a revolution - an entrepreneurial revolution

Its a good idea to be optimistic and tough amidst the turmoil in 2023  But look around the external environment:

1.  Big banks in US and Europe failing  (3s in the States, CSB in Switzerland, Deutsche Bank next?)
     What follows, industries failing too?

2.  Europe and US are reported  to be in recession?

3.  The only way that Central Banks and US Feds can control inflation is to put the economy into
      recession -  lay offs so that the consumer will buy less;

4.  Big company closures in Japan:     Sharp, Toshiba, the scandal at Olympus cameras
(It incurred big losses when it parlayed into stocks, and other unrelated non camera ventures; the
only saving grace was the Olympus medical)

We are better off than Japan whose GDP growth was reported to be only 1%;  vs Philippines 6%
Japan used to be our idol in the 1990s for growth innovation and management

Management of water resources

Every generation needs a revolution - an entrepreneurial revolution

It is funny to think that PBBM wishes that there is another entity to manage our water resources.  In the debate with Manny Pacquiao, the boxer mentioned of establishing a water department

Indeed it comes as a surprise that water is in stages of plenty and shortages:   floods and low water supply.  We experience floods and no water at times and indeed are people in relevant jobs doing their tasks well enough

Having travelled abroad, it was observed that in a southern continent country there are sips, small impounding ponds to control floods flow and store water for the dry season.   In Singapore, there are underground cisterns required of buildings to collect rainwater during rainy season, and to use the stored water for domestic purposes later on

Yes we can do this here   In the future, the battle for resources will be for water resources.   NWRB!!!

The thing is we do not have to invest in desaination plants  All we have to do is to conserve

This is not a rocket science.  This is a well open, public information
