Bakery forced to find new location by transit project
After years of recreational baking, Jo-Ann Morlando and her daughter, Dominica Clementi, opened their own bakery business in 2004. They managed to stay in business during the recession, but their success was threatened by a plan to expand light-rail service in Charlotte, N.C. Their property was in the way and the women were forced to move. Despite the frustrations and challenges they faced, they have found a new location and are once again open for business. How to show your employees you care
Instead of trying to dominate your employees, it's important to establish a work environment that emphasizes reciprocity, writes Mark Sanborn, president of Sanborn & Associates. It's also helpful to listen to what your employees have to say and show appreciation for good work. "Don't be afraid of overdoing it. You connect with people more deeply when you recognize the best in them and let them know," Sanborn writes. Entrepreneur online (6/25)

Study finds employee interest in performance-based pay
Four in 10 employees say they could be more productive if their pay was connected in some way to their companies' performance, according to a study by Kelly Services. A minority of respondents said they thought they were receiving fair compensation for their work, the study found. "Performance-based incentive plans can be a win-win situation," said Steve Armstrong, Kelly's general manager of U.S. operations. "Employees can benefit from the opportunity to work smarter and raise their earnings capacity, while employers benefit from increased productivity and a more engaged workforce." Lending has dried up for all businesses, not only small ones
Small businesses have suffered from a pullback in financing since the Great Recession. However, analysis from American Banker suggests credit tightening has been the case for companies of all sizes, not disproportionately for small ones. In fact, loans worth less than $100,000 have suffered the least, data show. "It's starting to get better, but there is still a lot of pain out there," Biz2Credit CEO Rohit Arora said. Ancient Egyptian statue moves in mysterious ways
A small Egyptian funereal statue dating to 1800 B.C. has been turning heads at a British museum ever since people noticed that it was slowly spinning to turn its back on visitors. A time-lapse video reveals that the statue slowly turns 180 degrees from guests during the day but remains still at night. The likely explanation is a combination of a force called "vibrational stick-slip friction" and the statue's weight balance, says scientist Paul Doherty.
