Management and Leadership lessons from Netflix "Romantic Doctor"

Every generation needs a revolution - an entrepreneurial revolution
















This post has not been a fan of dubbed Korean drama films and do not understand the heart sign and the thumb and forefinger sign.   Not being able to do anything I came across the Netflix romantic doctors
and this post jotted down a number of interesting points to ponder.  Truly the scripts of this series at said livestreaming platform are outstanding.   

1.   Saving lives.   Being focussed on mission, lifes goals.  The goal of anyone in his profession must be clear.  For doctors it is saving lives.  But many doctors, they are confused about being wealthier vs saving lives.  And majority it has been the former.

"We should never stop asking questions about why we live, so that we will continue to live"

2.   Closing companies or institutions and its effect on ordinary workers who simply want to survive  It is easy for the top guys because they can easily find jobs.   But for the rest of workforce the issue is survival and that must be felt by people who just make these pronouncments.  

3.  Being combative with their tools .   There was a scene where  Doctor Kim and Professor Kim were conversing on who wins:    "Win with what with scalpels"   And in the end there was this death on the table by Professor Park  and he soon resigned.   Severe competitiveness on the job just to see who wins in counterproductive.

4.  Being fired or investigated on the pretext of closing an institution.   Dr. Park was investigated over the death of the son of a head of big company.  And a team was sent to the Doldam hospital to investigate the death, (but we saw some scene where Chairman Do said use this excuse to find evidence to shut down the hospital for a much better and profitable new hospital for youth and longevity.  A new evidence was found saying that patient signed a consent, even when the risk of  death on the table may be possible  due to  WSW   WSW syndrome Mayo Clinic (characterized by  Tachycardia over 100 bpm

Teacher Kim said there is no need for further investigation  and the team should be sent home to which Chairman Do was furious

5.   Profit over people and service  The hospital was losing money continuing as trauma and ER center.  That is why the new President Prof Park had the reception manned by nurses who kept saying the ER was full even though it was not.   That the parameters for the performance was profitability.  If it was not met, the hospital had to be closed   Dr Park was to use the hospital for GS for Prof Park to operate on high value patientt.

But Doldam hospital was the only place in town with the nearest trauma center about 1.5 hours travel.  and that would cause valuable time to be lost for stroke or injuries causing severe blood loss  Chairman Do wanted a new wellness center to be established on the site of Doldam where people can be made to look 20-30 years younger thus generating more income for the group, rather than continue operating the ER and Trauma center at a loss

What should be primary reason why the hospital should be there profit or  people.  
We set up a rescue team for a medical foundation in honor of my father.   We spent zillions on water truck fire trauck ,expenses for fuel and transportation   About P3million in annual expenses.   We collected a minium amount for gasoline and we were highly criticized.  We were forced to shout down, donate the equipment, the fire truck and ambulance.  Viability was also important,  Profit is also  needed

The post is inspired to put up a trauma center with cooperation of DOH, Sen. Bong Go and other foundation to continue efforts like this.   

6.  Protecting ones own.    There is a persistent debate about the whistle blower Dr Seo , a brilliant but troubled surgoen who discovered the CBT of a patient operated on  by him was cut previously by mistake.  He brought this up  to Dr. Park  who siad that doctors must project each other in the the brutal socieity where punitive actions are taken vs  MDS.  It urns out that the culrprit was the elder brother of colleague and beloved.  Dr.  Cha.   Did he reveeal the culprit?   Or he helped protect one of his own?

7.  Strategizing one step over detractors and enemies.   There was a scene where  the Chairman Dr. Do visited  Doldam with the written evidence that Teacher Kim is being treated for MS (as ratted out by Dr Yan, 10 year old assistant of Prof Park,  to kick out Teacher Kim and shut dom Doldam Hospital  Teacher Kim countered by showing him the corporate  papers  of Doldam  Foundation  Trauma center, funded by  W4 billion by former chairman of Geosan Foundation (whose heart he replaced0.  That means Geosan has not more power and authority over Doldam

This firing thing, which I experienced 2x (for the company I establisihed just like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk) made despair  for such pain and embarrassment.  However I found an ally in  buyer wherein I drove out the initiator of the ouster and I stayed 8 years more in the institution.  It was nice counter.  

8.  The oddball project.   Teacher Kim had  several ring bound books  detailing their previous operations, their procedures which  he meticulously kept and asked Dr. Seo.  It was a research and documentation of their successes and glories.    Just as I am doing with these blogs   He  gave out the book and revealed to Dr. Seo because he believed Dr. Seo is an oodball and he should inherit this. 

9.  Talent Skill  protocol vs  reality    There is a intense debate in the series regarding brilliance in theory and  (as with talent) and skill honed over the years and protocol.    There was a case wherein the Minister was operated on at once without a CT scan (as is in the protocol).  But a CT scan (some in a Truma series K drama)   and Dr Kim was accused by Dr. Seo for being just plain lucky and insane.   This was used as an issue by a reporter  and gossipers to put Teacher Kim on the  spot.   

Dr. Park in a bus accidcent which he saw together  with Master Kim bet with the condition bet that only one could be saved (one with umbrella stabbed) and the other with crushed foot were all of suddent 100% saved by Dr. Kim.  

There is great difference between academician, office workers who do not see reality and are policy protocol conscious.    But reality is different and wheren lives matter.   Teacher Kim motto is save lives one life and will take all means to save life.  

10.  Cooperation and coopetition.   When Teacher Kim  right shoulder was operated by Drs. Seo and Soon, he could not operate on patients and he requested Prof Park who disappeared  and who left a letter of resignation (destroyed by Dr Yang, the ertswhile assistant of Prof Park)  Dr. Park agreed and was able to do 15 emergency procedures was praised by Teacher Kim.  Eventually they agreed to build a trauma center togeher (unknown, Teacher Kim obtained a pledge of 4 billion won a year from Geosan Foundation, and  Prof Park contacted his connections at  Ministry of Health.   Dr. Park called Teacher Kim crazy
