Spectacular Train Stations; was Tutuban train station one of them?
Repost from CNN News
We had a group work exercise on ideation and innovation which concerned megacities. The major topics included architecture, energy, mass transportation, waste disposal. And the class submitted a lot of ideas; it shows the degree of engagement and the development of creativity among students.
This article at CNN shows that you can have great transport system and great architecture at the same time. Our MRT and LRT train stations are uninspiring. Can they be made more appealing and compelling in the future?
The Tutuban train station looked great before, right?

Our class yesterday at Spentrep in H de la Costa - October 21, 2013
Creation and Miracle.
After the usual prayer, I discussed with the class our participation in continuing creation (as mentioned in Genesis Chapter 1 Verse 26, ie that man "shall gain dominion" over God's creation. How do we participate in creation? Merely planting trees or procreating children? New products and ideas coming from our imagination, creative synthesis, is creation. A memo, a poem, a marketing plan, a drawing, a product is a creation. The assignment submitted, the group work made, the picture composed and taken is a creation.
Miracle: those seemingly impossible tasks are miracles. The treatment by doctors and pharma meds are miracles. The college graduate made possible by selling taho or recycled plastic is a miracle. Miracles did not just happen during the time of Jesus Christ, but is happening on continuous daily basis.
Initiatives for Mega Cities
We engaged the class on various projects and initiatives that involves mega cities. Mega cities, cities with more than 10 million inhabitants, as residents from the countryside continue to pour in in the cities as the multitude look for convenient and comfortable life, if not steady source of income. Agriculture is hard and demeaning and people will, with education will look for better high paying jobs. And there is no way we can stop the trend.
There will be multitude of problems involving:
housing
transport
health
energy
waste disposal
architecture
The 4 groups were assigned to come up in rapid succession (no screening) ideas on how to address the above issues. The class came up with a lot of bright ideas. The four groups took on housing, energy, waste disposal, and transportation.
I mentioned that we are taking up entrepreneurship and MBA, so that next time the problem crops up, we do not engage in blame the govt routine. "Kasi the govt did not provide this...."
"Ask not what the country can do for you, ask what you can for the country"
The next time there are problems, despite the bureaucracy and resistance to change, we must be ready even with baby steps to address the problems mentioned above. We have to because in "AGSB, our country is our business"
PDQ
The group presentation on PDQ continued. This is the enterprise delivery system of the business plan, SPATRES. Only one of the groups tonight conformed to the guidance to present innovation on the business., as was last week.
Jeopardy
As was mentioned we will have no formal exams as with other conventional class but a Jeopardy contest, which is as demanding. It called for group effort, quick thinking and strategy. Some groups refused to take risks, and refused to answer. Those who continued to answer wrongly had negative score. I think everybody had fun because it was open book and computer. And everybody was adjusting to the Jeopardy rules.
Congratulations to Group 4 for a lopsided victory and I gave an award of snickers. Thanks to the creator of class Jeopardy: Emmanuel and his co host JC

Chase tentatively agrees to pay US govt $13 billion in fines (for saving Bear Stearns?)
JP Morgan Chase agreed to an unprecedented $13 billion in fines for allegedly being engaged in selling toxic mortgage securities during the 2008 financial crisis. It was raised from $11 billion. In the meantime, the criminal liability shall remain unresolved.
JP Morgan President Jaime Dimon personally discussed the deal with US Attorney General Eric Holder. It is odd that JP Morgan should face such a litigation. It acquired Bear Stearns which committed the felony, in order to stave off a financial crisis in 2008 It was a compassionate and kind act, and now JP the acquiring company must suffer
Uncontrolled, US debt shoots past $17.00 trillion; Chinese redbacks soon to be the next world currency?
Uncontrolled, the US debt has risen past to $17 trillion, right after the compromise law was passed. US debt climbed by $328 billion on Thursday alone. It stands at $17.084 trillion and steadily climbing every minute.
The US debt went up from $10.6 trillion since 2009 when Pres Obama took over. The increase is 60%News has it, and the Chinese student we have confirmed this, that the Chinese currency will soon be the international trade currency. This is not far fetched to happen.
From Business Insider - Chinese RMB soon to be international currency reserve?)
From Forbes - Chinese currency stronger than US dollar

Capital Control by Chase or the government, a la Cyprus?
From Alex Jones Infowars | October 17 2013
Small and corporate accounts of Chase are receiving letters that limit cash withdrawals and wire transfers beginning November 17, 2013. Alex Jones feasr the start of capital control and the start of Cyprus type of govt gouging/raiding personal accounts
But a Forbes article 2 days ago says that Chase merely wants to manage risks better and to encourage upgrade to a much higher balance account. Forbes thinks Chase is managing its costs and profitability. The fears of depositors are unfounded they say.
However shall we relate this to Chase sale of its NYC tower for $725 million Chinese conglomerate Fosun for $725 million Is Chase having liquidity problems?

A strategic paper on power gen did not employ BOS and is not responsive to current development in technology or environmental issues
One of the biggest casualty of green energy; to be closed in 2014
I just came across a paper on a power gen in an island province noted for environmental protection and eco tourism. The plant uses fossil fuel. The strategy presented is just the old stuff: better operating efficiency, better logistics, cost control, better marketing to address the load issue.
The following issues have not not been addressed:
1. The green innovation: black vs green technology. The environmentalists, who are plenty in the island are most likely to bother and pester the plant in the years to come. Black technology (bunker fuel) contributes to global warming and climate change which has been severe lately.
2. Cheaper green technology. Solar and wind costs are at par now with old technology. Solar cap ex is at $4.00 per watt (installed) Cost to operate is 0
3. Disturbing trends in Australia and Europe. They are to shutter down a l gW coal plant in Mallerawang (north of Sydney because of still carbon tax ($20+ per ton) and changing market situation (stiff competition from rooftop solar panels) The load factor in black technology in Europe has been on a decline (down to 49% in 2012) Competition from renewables to shutter a 1GW coal plant in Australia Is the handwriting on black technology on the wall
Power utilities lost half trillion Euros in 5 years!
At the end of the day, the paper recites the improvement on present business, nothing new, nothing unusual. No BOS no purple cow. It will be business as usual

What resource does an entrepreneur have? a super Brain
I have oft repeated that strategy is nothing more than a choice of Key Resources and Key Activities that an entrepreneur use to achieve his objectives. But more often than not, unlike a corporate animal, an entrepreneur does not have much to show in terms of material resources: manpower, machinery, and most especially money. (The often stated problem of start up is lack of capital!)
But the Paolo's report that your brain gives you UNLIMITED RESOURCES should negate that kind of thinking. Your brain has unlimited access to ideas, solutions to problems, networks and even other resources. and even how to obtain money. Entrepreneurs really should have UNLI ingenuity and courage to succeed. Brain power should make him succeed. Super brain by Deepak by Deepak Chopra
Your brain is your capital. Capita means head.

Special Report by Ed Vargas - Confucianism

The food stalls at A Venue are gone - now back to being a parking lot
I visited the A venue at Makati Avenue yesterday to check whether we can have the food trip there being near the H de la Cost campus; but lo and behold it is gone. What remains is the parking lot.
I found out that the tiangges are money maker both for the tiangge operators and tiangge lessors. They lessors pay a minimum of P1t per day up to P7t depending on the size. But of course, there are only days when you hold the tiangge and the bazaar like when its week end or during Christmas season

A sight to behold in Makati City, while US, the greatest country (before) in world flounders!
Makati City, PHL | October 14, 2013
The Petron building, tall and imposing at Buendia
Yesterday, I tried to see the A venue at Makati Avenue, near Kalayaan , where we had the Food Trip early this year. Unfortunately it is gone. What used to be tiangge site is back to its original purpose - a parking lot.
However I had the opportunity to take pictures of the now imposing skyline of Makati (it is even more imposing). I walked and I had my camera, and the lighting was perfect.
Oh how proud we should be of the 7.8% GDP growth of the PHL, vs the 2+% of US of A. And while our country coasts along to this growth, US is experiencing 1. a shutdown for the 13th day 2. and a possible default on its debt, a downgrade, increase in interest rate, destruction of the world financial system that may drag the rest of Asian economies to an abyss.
Let us enjoy the pictures of our progress. It is a karma. If you watch "Amigo" at Cinema 1 (cable TV) you will feel terrible on how the Americans treated the Filipinos during the Filipino American war at the turn of century. This is a vindication. While there is hopelessness and poverty spreading in their country, in the PHL this what we see.
Are we in the PHL or in HK? Nice buildings eh?

Group Creative Activities
To : John and the rest of the class
In a way, the assignment is a trick question. You may have just gone through a descriptive analysis; but after reading my post of breakthrough thinking, you may have gone further by going on to the Solution After Next. What could be done to improve the business being analyzed. This was sadly lacking in the presentation last week. Will you end up with me too product?
Inspiration for Tiendesitas at Ortigas Property
Tiendensitas is a collection of small stores started by Chief Rex Drilon of Ortigas Company Limited Partnership in 2005. It occupies some 3 hectare of the 18.5 hectare of prime property reclaimed by Ortigas from the Rizal Provincial Govt which failed to develop the donated property. It is along C5 and has parking for 300 vehicles.
It is Maranao and bahay kubo inspired which served as anchor development for the 18.5 ha property. Call center buildings, a church, Motorcity, hypermart and other prime tenants occupied most of the property. It used to be a driving range. (not much value added)From Philstar
Everything Mobile including vegies and fruits
Mobile business does not refer to communications alone. It refers to mobile vendors and everything that is delivered to your doorstep.
One such thing is mobile vegie vendor. You do not have to go to the store or market. These mobile vendors stop at your doorstep. They may even sell to you on credit

What are the purposes of the Special Reports?
The Special Reports are worth 10 points in our grading system. The student makes the report in the class and I ask for comments, discussion. Then they upload this at Slideshare for sharing with the class primarily. The other students do not have to take notes and later on they will remember, in the Slideshare archive, what we did in class. Lasting memories, eh.
1. The SR is any of the following general classification: self mastery, mastery of the environment/opportunity, and mastery of the enterprise. This goes back to our debate on the first day.
2. The SR trains the student to be special (unique, differentiated, noticed), as with the inspirational video. Every entrepreneur must have a compelling very noticeable, differentiated (not with diprensiya!) business to survive, flourish in the marketplace.
3. At least the student must have remembered one thing in this entrep class - his special report, permanently archived at Slideshare.
4. Posting at slideshare publicize the student. Slideshare presentations are viral and places the students name and the topic at the top of Google Page Search. Slideshare is owned by Linked In, a search engine for professionals. It makes you visible to head hunters, recruiters, and other senior executives. You will not be unemployed for a long time
So what are the following special reports all about? self mastery, mastery of the opportunity, or the enterprise (still about nature, nurture, and swerti)?
1. John Gokongwei?
2. Business and the Bible
3. Blue Ocean Strategy
4. Sun Tzu (this is tricky)
5. Confucianism

Innovation by a Party Needs Provider
I came across a brochure inserted at the mailbox today and I was pretty much amazed at the desktop publishing quality of the brochure. It was back to back.
The innovation in the business/offering were the following:
1. various offering for various needs; and some were quite new like the chocolate fountain (you normally just find this in a 5 star hotel buffett). The various packages like Party Package 1 to 4, baptismal package, balloon decor package, chocolate fountain. The various packages fit various packages and are affordable
(No I am not advertising in the usual blogger mode, their products/services)
2. change of PTM - they also supply in bulk party needs as balloons, tarpaulin, souvenirs, flower arrangement, loot bags, name tags, poppers, bubble machine etc.
I would like to think that this business generates a lot of revenues because the owner is ingenious. New ideas create value. New value means more wealth.
These innovative individuals drive the economic engine which has made our country very progressive lately
What does this indicate:
1. The wants in the party market have expanded.
2. Filipinos value occasions/events in the lives of loved ones and they spend (this is an important psychographic market research data - not SEC)
3. You really have to constantly innovative to be noticed like this brochure which I ventured to analyze

Our main concern with standard strategic tools and analysis is that the output is me too business/products
I had some discussions with some Spentrep students who are currently taking up Strama. For them, being the final paper, the Strama is the subject. Spentrep is an elective. I have pointed out and even Prof Fagan of HBS (who worked for BPI as a consultant) that we need applied or practical strategy.
After listening to to Jaime Mandejar's BOS, we can say:
1. If we look historically at products and company history, then we will continue to be in the red ocean, have price war, and red ocean competition.;
2. Then if it is driving forward using a rearview mirror; then, what you come out with strategy will be maybe moving backward or sideways?
3. BOS says that most businesses now did not exist 5 years ago. Therefore, new businesses that are compelling and differentiated would be your best bet. Blue Ocean business that exist in new market space will flourish. That could not happen with traditional strama tools and analysis. BOS means sometimes abandoning the current business models (Schumpeters destructive creation)
4. Also if we use the same tools, same analysis leading to the same conclusion, why are we wondering that we come out with stale or me too strategies?
I will have my entrep students with their creative synthesis, new products with compelling MVP beating the best strama paper.. I would like to see them, think creatively rather than err hmmm strategically. In the confusion of the terms and tools, they sometimes get confused or do not get the straight clear meaning of the word itself.
They might have missed Lidell Hart, Sun Tzu, Hannibal, Clauzewitz and lately that of Gen Vo Nguyen Giap at Dien Bien Phu
Please view my presentation on the subject matter:

Still having many ideas at 62
Although all ready in my second year as a senior, having trained my mind, I am happy that for friends and business friends alike, and even in our own business, I am still able to come up with my own NU 12. I would have easily complied with my NU 12 requirement.
For instance, in lending;
1. bridge financing
2. off balance sheet lending (creative financing)
3. escrow arrangement
for the real estate:
4. incremental development
5. creekside;
6. tiangge mall
7. tiangge cum residential
others;
8. solar panels
9. solar panel financing
10. solar assisted air conditioner
11. SAAC financing
12. 48 vdc solar aircon
13. heat exchanger for car aircon

My cousin wants me to conceptualize a cosmetic surgi cum birthing center
In the birthday celebration of my aunt (76 years old today) the cousin wants me to develop a business concept plan for her. She knows I am interested in low cost health care.
1. concept - cosmetic surgicenter with delivery room; the surgicenter has to be private, because those who want repair jobs do not want to be seen; She will, as she is training for this now be using the surgicenter. The delivery center will be priced at P4t each; nursing teams will be paid per delivery at say x amount, and the delivery center will primarily be a training ground for ob gyne residents wanting to have more dr experience.
Shared resources: nurses, residents, or, building, thus costs will be lower. Location is near the public hospital
For those who have basic delivery and anaesthesia - x amount;
For those who want more anaesthesia etc - y amount
For those who want to bring their own ob - z amount
2/3 of the birthing center will be for x amount; the y and z patients will subsidize the cost of the x patient.
The residents will get x amount for say x number of delivery per month; however, for those in excess, they will get the same amount. This is the Dr. Devi Shetty formula in India.
I said I will attend to this after we finish her condo.

What will I do with the two commercial properties assigned to me for a business concept proposal
Offhand, these are my ideas on how to go about this.
Major strategies:
1. I will go on a developmental, incremental development, to prepare our finances and the market (I did this with the commercial complex we had, as what the Ortigas did with Greenhills and tiendesitas) For tiendensitas:
Phase 1 cosntruction of the open air tiendesitas, inviting tiangges and cheap rental
Phase 2 - Hypermart and motor city
Phase 3 - Call center and church
Phase 4 - Now commercial complex, remodelling of tiendesitas, high rise condo construction
2. Starting point - create differentiated points of interest for the subject property that will draw crowd.
1 hectare property:
The place will be called "Creekside" The live flowing creek will be the point of interest. (Or could be barbecue park)
Phase 1 - Barbecue park, and other recreation; darts, and some other restaurants.
Phase 2 - Office buildings, computer shops, cafes, ministops
Phase 3 - Town house, residential development
2 hectare property
Phase 1 Fun house center, with tiangge food stalls (a la Makati ave)
or a Tiangge Mall
Phase 2 Medium luxury residential townhouse
