5 Steps To Reduce Workplace Stress
By Jynell Berkshire

It is normal to have some workplace stress in the daily operations of your business. However, excessive stress can affect your physical and emotional health and interfere with your productivity. Your ability to manage your stress level can mean the difference between success and failure.

You may think that you can't do anything about your workplace stress level. This is not true. Learning how to manage your stress is completely in your control. Plus, the better you are at managing the stress, the better you will feel.

So, let's look at five steps on how you can control and manipulate workplace stress to have a more balanced life.

Step 1: Recognize The Signs and Symptoms

Reducing stress starts with recognizing the signs and symptoms. Often times, the true source of your stress may not be obvious and you overlook it.

For example, if you are worried about a work deadline, your stress may be the result of your procrastination and not the actual project itself. This is often the case when you are not passionate about what you are doing. You immediately find yourself behind the eight ball.

Excessive stress can also occur when you put pressure on yourself to perform at optimum levels all the time. Trying to do everything yourself can be quite exhausting. So, be sure to delegate tasks when you can. You will be glad you did.

Another way to reduce stress is to take care of yourself, which is the next step.

Step 2:  Take Care Of Yourself

When stress interferes with your ability to run your business, it can also impact your physical and emotional health. When this happens, it is time to take action. The better you feel, the better you will be able to manage workplace stress without feeling overwhelmed.

For example, if you are having a bad day and feel like you want to explode, take a break. Walk around the office, go outside to breathe in some fresh air or even take a few minutes to mediate, these are all ways you can immediately reduce your stress.

You can also reduce your stress by being more active. Exercise is a powerful stress reliever, even though it may be the last thing you want to do. Schedule an appointment on your calendar, just like what you would do for any other appointment or meeting, to exercise. This will help you to stay motivated and establish a routine.

Once you have recognized the signs and symptoms of your stress and have started to take care of yourself, then take charge and accept what you can't change.
One of the hottest jobs today is becoming a social media manager.

Step 3: Take Charge (Accept What You Can't Change)

Some sources of stress are unavoidable, regardless if in the workplace or not. You simply cannot prevent them or even change them, like the death of a loved one, a serious illness or even losing your home to a natural disaster. In these situations, you are forced to accept things as they are.

As a business owner, accepting what you cannot change is often times very difficult to swallow. You want to always be in the control … and, if you are not, your stress level increases. So, rather than stressing yourself out over what you cannot control, focus on how to solve the problem and not the problem itself.
You also need to stay positive and look for the good in every situation. As they say, "everything has a silver lining."

Step 4: Stay Positive

When you focus your time and energy on being positive, your stress evaporates. All your positive energy begins to work in a forward direction. By simply changing your expectations and attitude, you alter the situation.

An example of this is what I call "looking at the big picture." Meaning, when you stop and put everything into perspective, is it really worth the stress. Will it even matter tomorrow, next week, or even next year? If the answer is "no," then stay positive. Alter, adapt or even dismiss your stressor and move on. It really is not worth letting the stress get you down.

And, when the stress is too much, then allow yourself some time to have fun and relax.

Step 5: Have Fun & Relax

Beyond a take-charge approach and a positive attitude, you can reduce stress by making time to have fun. Often times you are so focused on running your business day in and day out that you forget to take care of your own needs.

You forget what it is like to take a Friday off to enjoy a long weekend or to even spend an afternoon golfing. You forget what it is like to have fun. You forget that nurturing yourself is a necessity.

By making time for fun and relaxation, you will be in a better place to handle life's stressors when they inevitably come.

Managing stress is all about taking charge. Whether it is recognizing the signs and symptoms, taking care of your physical and emotional health or accepting what you can't change, you can reduce control and manipulate workplace stress to have a more balanced life.

To control and manipulate workplace stress to have a more balanced life, follow these 5 steps:

1.  Recognize the signs and symptoms.

2.  Taking care of yourself.

3.  Take charge and accept what you can't change.

4.  Stay Positive

5.  Have fun and relax.

I am a very busy woman who is running 3 companies and has very little time to read newsletters/reports from others. I receive tons of emails about how to build my businesses. Yours is the only one that I almost always open!

Hats off to both of you for producing such an informative and yet, easy to read, publication! Thanks also for giving me so many tips for success!

Body:

A great way to live a healthier life is by making sure you eat enough green vegetables. One of the easiest ways to add more greens to your diet is by drinking a "green" smoothie that contains vegetables, along with other ingredients that can make them taste better. If you just can't handle the idea of making a green smoothie, then try adding a green supplement to your diet so you can at least get your greens through a little tablet.

Mind:

As humans, we are highly social animals and thrive on interacting with others. Such interaction is great for your memory. It boosts your sense of awareness and ability to communicate with others. Having meaningful relationships with individuals around you is not only good for emotional health but also for brain health.

Spirit:

One of the best ways to keep yourself in a good mood is to surround yourself with positive people, and work on projects that you really enjoy. Life is too short to work on projects and with people that you don't even like. Make it a habit to work on meaningful projects, and everyone around you will benefit.
