This post had to grapple with this question from a student in a MBAH program where he questioned our quest for entreprreneurship and at the same moderate and be spiritual - to moderate greed and be kind. Are we professors, professing this kind of thinking hypocrites?
The student drives a sports car and ophthalmologist and a bone surgeon posed a question on value- how much should a kneee replacement cost P50,000, 200,000, 500,000 1 M. Pricing is a value creation. How much depends on how the patient needs the procedure and how much he/she can afford. Any price, without competition is a good price. Especially if we compare it to foreign pricing, a P500,000 knee operation ($10,000) would be cheap but very expensive heare.
Indeed this is a very defficult question for us teaching MBA in a Catholic U to answer the question. Lately health services went up and when MVP tried to rationalize hospital care by acquring MD hospitals prices were standardized - to be higher than usual, so he paid good money to Drs hospital.
But we know for a fact that Drs are used to the idea of giving the poor patients their baon and even their samples so that the indigents can get good medical care. I even overheard when I was in pharma, that Dr.s regularly treat indigents pro bono.
Being kind and generous excercising Christian faith, exercising judgment is something grad school cannot teach. It comes from freedom to decide to judge....
