PRANAV Case

Situation:
Marc Orbos and Karlo Nisce opened up Pranav New York at Robinsons Galleria in November 2004 . It was a part of their Management Research Report to complete their requirements for their MBA graduation at the Asian Institute of Management. Pranav New York was envisioned to be the first male spa in the Philippines integrating grooming and wellness services for Filipino men. After three months of operations, Pranav New York already incurred losses amounting to P825,568.

Issues:
<![if !supportLists]>1.       <![endif]>Pranav New York was not able to attract its target market due to its inaccessible location. It lacked the much needed high traffic incidence since its location inside Robinson’s Galleria was not accessible unlike the other barber shops who were located at the ground floor of Robinsons Galleria. It was also located at the opposite side of the area where male working professionals are concentrated and the demographic mix at Robinson’s Galleria skewed towards the female segment which comprised 60% of the mall goers.
<![if !supportLists]>2.       <![endif]>Profitable and high value services such as the massage and oil treatments were not maximized which led to a net loss in their first three months of operation.
<![if !supportLists]>3.       <![endif]>Pranav was not able to maximize the floor area and its ability to offer a wider variety of services to customers was limited.
Action Plans:
<![if !supportLists]>1.       <![endif]>Pranav New York should find a new location inside Robinsons Galleria that would be easily accessed by its target market. It should locate where there is high foot traffic like in the ground floor of the mall or near traffic inducers such as popular dining establishments and famous retail stores. In one of the surveys conducted, they found out that the primary reason of customers in selecting barbershop was convenient location. Locating inside the mall is still preferable given the constant foot traffic generated by the mall. If it decides to stay in Robinsons Galleria, it should also tap the female market given the predominance of females in the said mall. It was also found out that females spend more over males on grooming services. To effectively attract the female market, Pranav should adjust their products and marketing efforts to get the attention of the female segment in Robinsons Galleria.

<![if !supportLists]>2.       <![endif]> If Pranav cannot find an accessible location inside Robinsons Galleria, it should consider moving out to another mall or area where there is an abundance of male working professionals who goes to barber shops and salons for their grooming needs after all, Robinsons Galleria’s mall goers skewed towards the female segment.

<![if !supportLists]>3.       <![endif]>Pranav should also maximize its high values services such as the oil treatments and massage by giving staffs additional incentives if they get customers availing on these products. This is to encourage the staff to push these highly profitable services. It can also bundle grooming services with massage and provide discounts to customers who avail of the promo. The staff should encourage every customer to stay longer inside Pranav and patronize other services especially the high value ones.

<![if !supportLists]>4.       <![endif]>Pranav should also maximize its floor space by using barber’s chair to enable its staff to do a wider array of services such as shaving and massage to their customers more efficiently using the barber chair.

PJ Lanot a former actor, host, restauranteur wants to be remembered as teacher of entrepreneurship

                                Two PJs:   PJ Lanot and Prof Jorge;  two teachers of entrep

PJ Lanot (a tocayo) wants to be remembered as a teacher for business and entrepreneurship.  He enjoys most his teaching engagement to provinces and other Asean countries under the sponsorship of DTI as his most rewarding endeavor. (He asked me if am still a GoNegosyo speaker, when he noticed my Tshirt bearing that logo) That is his contribution to nation building as an Atenean  (He finished Mangement of Communications technology at Ateneo.  (I found out he is a year ahead  of my daughter, at AdeMU Class 2004, and he is member of the Blue Babble battalion - the UAAP cheerleaders for Ateneo.  He married Alessa Libongco? a daughter of a another famous restaurenteur and blogs at Life After Breakfast

He values so much his experience with the people of Jolo whom he inspired to study to go to Manila to avoid the place of war and conflict.  And his being with the farmers who borrow money just to send him a text of gratitude

He is a TV and Events host, Film, TV and Voice Actor, Restaurateur and motivational speaker. He studied and worked first as media buyer for Starcomm where he found out that the stars made 100x more money than him in a single day.  He quit his day job and joined the celeb crowd.  He did what he really wanted to do.  When I interviewed him early on, he is related to National Artist/poet Serafin Lanot (a poet) and his daughter Mara Lanot (a professor at UP on arts and married to Pete Lacaba and former staff of Philippine Free Press)

As a TV and Film Actor, he has done voice over for John Lloyd, Ryan Agoncillo and other ads

MBA Regis Clark Entrep Class last February 21, 2014

I was so glad to have traveled/commuted to be with a group of very enthusiastic and very bright students from AGSB Clark last Friday.

We continued discussion on who they are and I annotated their discussion of life history with the connection of their life with entrepreneurship. A new class member came:  Christine Tubig whom I learned is an executive officer of a family owned real estate business in Floridablanca.  Their PTM are OFW and their packages are in the P1.2 to 2 million price range.   I hope the OFW boom continues.

Our main activity was the group creative activity - ie presentation of crimes.  Committing  crime calls for high level of creative thinking, problem solving, anticipation of problems, exit strategy (in case you get caught) or even how to distribute, fence, launder the loot.  Legitimate business can  not afford not to benchmark copy the criminals hatch a crime.  And also, people, I am amazed, really get out of the box when they plan a crime, and could be dangerous.  The crimes presented were:   Philhealth scam (on eye operation)  black mail, and betting on sports (basketball)  The betting on basketball exposed the dark side of sports which is the more lucrative part:   betting.   Football, and other sports have joined the dark side.

Thus the joke on Disney left.. (If you did not get it, you must have a slow IQ or that the joke is reserved for geniuses)

Only 4 Entrep Professors Remain at AGSB

We had a cluster meeting with Prof Dr. George Fong whom I learned took over Ms. Winnie Constantino who has or will be resigning together with several others faculty.   I just learned that there are only 4 remaining Entrep professors for elective:   Prof Glen San Luis (mentor of yours truly and Dr. Tony)  Dr. Tony del Carmen, Dr. George Fong,  and yours truly.  This was our first meeting in several years.  We had a plenty under Col Sibal.

Comments on the Business Plans submitted by previous Spentrep Class

I am just about to complete checking the Business Plan submitted by the MM and Spentrep class last semester, some 50 calendar days ago.  They were supposed to submit this last January 10, 2014 which was 45 calendar days after the semester ended.

I know that we need to develop this skills among our MBAs especially those are taking Entrep as elective subject.  A BP is a guide on how to start and run your start up well.  (Although the trend now with other quarters are to:   1.  come out with the business model as your guide/dashboard 2. and for lean start up to come up with MVP  -  minimum viable product at once and test it - at once. Rapid prototyping, having  a product is very important if you are to race to the market place and be the market leader, and rake in the profits.

Some salient points:

1.  The Business Plan is 25 points of the total grade.  It is the final exam, the convergence of all the learning for the semester..  This is where we apply the lectures, the cases, the special reports, and the slideshare presentation on BP, the group creative activities on Micromarket, the PDQ.

2.  The BP format as prescribed has to be followed and not less than 40 pages as specified in the syllabus.  Before, if the paper does not follow the format or is less than 40 pages, it gets a 1.  This quarter is more forgiving.

3.  Be sure:  there is a table of contents and executive summary.  The organization the offerings are not mentioned at the bottom but are important nevertheless

4.  At the concept, as part of the learning on lean start up, you must have 3 word tag for your business.  It should be catchy and denote your business that is MAGIC, UNIQUE, DIFFERENTIATED, MESMERIZING, SEDUCTIVE, MAGNET, ENCHANTING, A WOW BUSINESS.

4.  The salient points to be graded are:

     1. Business concept and model  10%

        Concept  -  50 words or less that describes the business:  the product, benefits, the PTM, and the location, and even positioning.  We did a lot of exercises on this on group creative activities and impromptu exercises in the class

       Business Model   - the BM canvass has to be used, and briefly described.   Focus on the MVP.   This is the dashboard of the business.  The BM answers a basic question -  how does the business make money.  Therefore the cents and pesos have to be specified in the cost and revenue portion of the BM.  It should not escape the eye of the student, if any of the elements of the BM can be innovated.

     2.  Business objectives  10%  VMO KRAPI

     Hand outs have been given at the start of the semester and they must be followed.  After going through the FS, the student goes back to the SMART objectives and the KRAPI

    Most students forget the job generation part;  we have to remember the Ateneo Nation Building motto.  How do you contribute to nation building

   3.  The Product     10%

        1.  What are the customer wants and needs being satisfied;

       2.  What are the demographics and psychographics of the PTM

      3.  What are the features?  What are the benefits?

      4.  Competitive analysis  ( on many fronts, the product, the company, distribution, ads, promo, special deals, SWOT if you may)

      5. Alpha and beta testing

      For the lean start ups:

      1.  You need the prototype, the Minimum Viable Product

      2.  The 3 word tag to capture the imagination of the prospects

      Surprisingly, many miss this out.

4.  Market estimate:  20%

    The outcome of this portion is to make an intelligent guess estimate of the the sales.  Where do you base your sales..

    The case for this is  Pranav,   The group creative activity is micromarket

    The macro and micro analysis (which includes the traffic count and analysis of sales of similar establishments in the same service or catchment area)  Unfortunately, many stop at the micromarket and fail to make a jump to the sales estimate

    This is the proving  portion, after having studied your product, the customer, and the competition, you can sell this much.  This ME portion supports the Financial.  Will you have enough volume to break even?

   Is the risk worth taking because you have enough buyers.

   Will you do a pilot or market test?  Did you do an FGD?

5.  EDS  20%

    Enterprise Delivery System;  this portion was taken in MICO.  This is SPATRES mentioned in the handout by Morato on Strategtic Planning.

   This is is SPATRES:  Strategy, Program (Projects) Activities, Tasks, and Resources

   This is ITO:  INput Throughputs, and Outputs, Matching and Outcomes

   Inputs:      4M:  materials, money, materials machinery

  Throughputs:    activities, projects, programs, Job Descriptions, business process and improvements:;  job descriptions, controls, manuals

  Outputs:   Products and services

  Matching:   4ps of marketing.  The products and services must match the Customer Wants and Needs.

  Outcomes:  The business objectives mentioned in the first part of the BP.

HOW DO THE OBJECTIVES CONNECT WITH THE KEY ACTIVITES AND RESOURCES (This is the strategy portion.)

You must be able to discuss this in great detail;  and it could not be less than 40 pages.  Please do not submit that contains a one page infographic.

6.  Financials:  20%

    It must contain at least 3 elements:

   1.  Cash flow

   2.  Profit and Loss

   3.  Balance Sheet

   This office tries to furnish the student with spreadsheet template (Excel on how to do this easily)  Most have built in ratio.  You must know how the thing works, not necessarily how to do the Excel.  The student must understand how this connects with the objective, key resources and activities.

7.  Compliance with the regulators: 5%

   You must conform to the local national, and even international regulations.  And may include ISO accreditation.   Discuss how you are going to comply.  Will you be a good citizen?  Will you pay the correct the taxes?  How will you deal with difficulties with regulators:  with corruption and facilitation?

8.  Exit strategy:    5%

This refers to two business situations:

When things get bad:  how to bail out?  How do you liquidate, what are your contingencies to lessen your loss?  What are the red flags?  What are the thresholds for bailing out?

When business is good and is profitable:

Plans for succession, IPO, selling for profit? How do you add, multiply, subtract, or divide?

Unfortunately many students neglect this and get nothing as a grade for this.  Please pay attention on this section

N.B.

1.  The BP should be 40 pages or more.  When you do your EDS well and thoroughly, it could be more than 40 pages, just for EDS

2.  Have a table of contents.   (You do that for strama)

3.  Have an executive summary, although you write this last

For the last term, 3 students got a grade of 1 for the following reasons:   their BP were less than 40 pages as specified;  they did not contain the  above mentioned parts, did not have enough data and details to prove that the business is viable, and can be operated; and were badly written.  Some were cut and paste afffair, which is a  bad practice for somebody who will soon be called a Master of BA

COURSE TITLE:  ENTREPRENEURSHIP
(SPENTREP)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
            We face a brand new world.

            It is even a crazy world (cf. what Steve Jobs referred to as: “To be foolish and crazy”

            The economy and society we used to know no longer exist.  The old economic theories even management concept no longer apply and have become irrelevant.  The business models of the great multi-nationals, the teachings and the concepts of management guru and business captains like Harold Geneen, Jack Welch no longer hold true.  What was true then cannot be true now.

            The old economic theories espoused by Adam Smith have been debunk by a group commissioned by billionaire George Soros. They are done with the work and they are inviting people and scholars to submit new economic theories.

            Even the capitalist model is being severely challenged by academicians and scholars.  No less than Michael Porter, The Mister Competition of Capitalism has proposed a new model called CSV (Corporate Shared Value).  Mr. Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank, suggested the social business. In a social business, the benefits, the value are distributed throughout the entire spectrum of the stakeholders.  It is value sharing is part of the entire business process and not at the end when business has made money.

            Most of the businesses that we have now did not exist five years ago.  And therefore, your competitors now were not there when you started your business.  Are you adapting to the business environment as fast as you really should? 

Consider the current world, and social and economic milieu:

1)    China would have become the world’s largest economy now; US owes China roughly 3 trillion dollars.  But Chinese economy has slowed down.  There are talks about the devaluation of Yuan;
2)    The US petro dollars may no longer exist, the world trade in currencies other than the dollar;
3)    The BRICS Economy is no longer as strong as it used to be;
4)    The Japanese economy is static and is trying its best to the current Prime Minister to revitalize its economy.  It is a problem country according to the IMF Chief;
5)    The world’s global resources like oil and fresh water are dwindling.  The fact that oil prices are going up, soon there will be no more oil;
6)    Severe storms and drought due to global warming;
7)    Europe’s economy would hardly grow and many of its government treasuries and private banks are in distress;
8)    Need we talk more about the financial crisis in the US: the 17 trillion dollars public debt, municipalities and cities that are bankrupt like Detroit?
9)    The Middle East Crisis: the Egyptian Civil war, Syrian civil war, the Iraq-Iran problem, the war in Afghanistan which are sending shivers to the world, causing speculation and erratic oil prices
10) The off-shoring, outsourcing phenomenon.

And yet businesses and business schools do and teach the same stuff.  The schools of tomorrow are no longer the B School.  They are going to be the D School.

            The ten points mentioned above demands a new mindset, a new paradigm – a forever creative and innovative mindset.

            It calls for an entrepreneur.

            Just because entrepreneurship is an elective does not mean it is easy.  It is as rigorous as the other course subject at the GSB.
           
What this course is not about.

1)    Livelihood;
2)    Tips on how to start and run a business;
3)    Theories;
4)    Old business concept.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1.    To give students a newer understanding of entrepreneurship; 
2.      To outlast crisis in business world via entrepreneurship;
3.      To change mindset / paradigm / practices / professionalism of student even in medical world – to be "entrepreneurial";
4.      To encourage MBA students to consider being a boss – business owner;
5.      To prepare students to do an extensive interactive paper research and analysis / synthesis, in anticipation of Strama;
6.    To hone the minds of the students on analysis and critical thinking.

Otherwise you can't have a saleable product, an enterprise observes certain measures / procedures to ensure that product satisfies customer. "Taho" must be pure otherwise it will not congeal. After a certain time, it is no longer "Taho".

2. GROUP CREATIVE ACTIVITY 1 – New Product Design / Concept
            Using word algorithm, lateral thinking, or other Right Brain Thinking method, the group will look at their own/third party product and design on improvement. The new design must be compelling to the PTM, have solid benefits and affordable. The design / report must contain:

Bill of materials / CGS (affordability)
How to produce the product
Product objective:
1.      How does product meet customer wants and needs?
2.      How does it defeat competition?
3.      How it is unique?
Analysis of product versus competition (2 or 3) on certain key attributes. What will be the new positioning?
        
3. GROUP INNOVATIVE ACTIVITY 2
            From Group Creative Activity 1, the group goes to test of doable execution. The group must be able to come up a working model of new product that met PTMs need and wants; that resulted from Creative Activity. This will be done in the classroom using limited time and resources

          This is group observation work when students see first hand the three factors of MICRO MARKET analysis at work: CUSTOMER, LOCATION, and COMPETITION.
            Go to a mall and observe:
One fast food vs. another (Wendys vs. Jollibee vs. McDo.). Other variants…

6. GROUP CREATIVE ACTIVITY 4 - New Process / New Profit (5)
            Examine a target business / enterprise. Look at present enterprise, process and plan / draw new process that will result in change in following metrics objectives:
1.      New customer satisfaction delight
2.      Lower costs – SP – Higher Profit
3.      Better product quality (less rejects/breakdown)
4.      Faster turn-around time, queuing

7. NEW ILLEGAL ACTIVITY
            Plan a new crime that has not been done before. It must be outlandish and totally new. The victims will not know what hit them and police can't detect catch who did it.

            New 12 is a practice set for creativity / innovation while difficult in the beginning 6 exercise sharpens the mind to create and innovate. Creativity is thinking of new idea / things, innovation is doing new thing. "Deep practice develops talent" – Dan Coyle.

The NU idea cannot just remain as new idea especially if it just lifted from the net or from a book. CRITERIA FOR BUSINESS PLAN (25%)
Topics / Business – It is a good idea that once the student enrols at this subject, he/she immediately "enrols the business" he/she has in mind. Eight (8) weeks is  too short to write a decent business plan!
Size – preferably micro to small only
ASSETS ≤ 2 Million
EQUITY ≤ 500 T
If the student will start a new business, he and his/her group must show proofs they can raise the amount.
Ownership
Can be owned by the student
May be owned by somebody else, but w/o Business Plan yet or is eligible to be
made better by a Business Plan.
New / Start Up or Existing?
Either may be done. But given the time constraint, the student must select an existing business enterprise. In case it is existing, the student can't just describe its present operation – he MUST discuss both its present operation AND proposal in each of the functions that must be made NEW / ENTREPRENEURIAL.
MICROMARKET
It is good to have MACRO items included (PESTE – Political, Economic, Social, technological, Environmental) that are relevant to the enterprise, but the student must be heavy on the MICRO MARKET – Customer segment wants & needs, competitor, and location.
Focus on how to make this small business find its place in the sun – to succeed.
Not "hopefully" but SURELY!
The business plan should have a Financial portion – start up cost, Break Even Analysis, cash flow, Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet. 3 years projection is the minimum. If you miss number 5, the paper gets an F! If you submit a late paper its
INC for a period of first 30 days, and an F thereafter for entire course (not just for BP).
N.B.  You cannot submit a strama paper for the requirement. Neither can you submit a departmental plan, a project or operational plan, nor a plan for medium to large business.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY:

1. Don't be late. Being early is an earmark of an entrepreneur. If you are late for class by more than 30 minutes, YOU WILL TREAT THE ENTIRE CLASS; more than 1 hour late is considered an absence. The maximum number of absences is three (3).
2. Late papers get an F! Nota bene!
3. Have your cellphones on silent mode while in class. If it rings or sounds for text,
    YOU WILL TREAT THE ENTIRE CLASS.
4. Groups of not more than 5 members each will be formed to co-manage the class: conduct opening and closing prayers, and conduct the class in an interesting   way, do graded group work and case analysis.
5. Business Plan should be in hard copy form. (8.5" x 11" / Letter Paper, 1-inch margins, Arial 11, Double-spaced) (Please don't ask – "Can I e-mail?").
6. Students with perfect attendance will get awards at the end of the term.
7. There will be a class secretary who will be appointed at the start of the term.
    He/She will check attendance; remind group assignments, activities, handle simple administrative tasks of scheduling, etc. Her / his decision will be final.
8.  All ideas that are not the student's should be acknowledged via footnotes and  bibliography.
9. Cut-and-paste papers are not to be tolerated. There are available software that can detect such. The Professor appreciates original work and may entirely disregard   work that seems to be lifted from the Internet.
10. Plagiarism and copying original work, not properly annotated are not to be tolerated. The student, when caught, shall get an F.
11. The AGSB Faculty is enjoined not to give INC grade anymore. If the student can't       make up for a work and submit a major paper like a business plan 4 weeks after            end of semester, the professor is enjoined to give an F instead of INC for the subject!   (September 5, 2009 memo from the REGISTRAR).
12. The subject matter that must be reflected on the student's Business Plan must be those discussed in the class. Irrelevant materials will be disregarded.
13. The required format for the Business Plan is contained in the syllabus/case   book. 
      Please comply.
14. The grading policies contained in the syllabus will be the one followed in grading     the   student.  Please read them carefully.
15. Those papers, especially the NU12 that do not conform to the notes and  assignments will not be published.
16. The student is given up to the last day of class to submit all late assignments.   Otherwise the rule on late assignment shall apply. The same holds true for offer to   make up.

1.      Student has 45 days after last day of class to submit Business Plan. The Prof. will be available for consultation during the period.
