Dr Norio Usui of ADB asks AGSB masters to change mindset

Ampitheater, APS Building, Rockwell Center, Makati City PHL  | March 13, 2013

Dr. Usui of ADB repeatedly challenged the AGSB masteral candidates audience in the Opeman forum for reviving Manufacturing to change their mindsets about development and industrialization.  He challenged them to do a peat of the BPO. It was not an industry that did not exist 10 years ago, but now it brings in nearly $20 billion in trade to the PHL, and about a million jobs.  It does not have govt fiat or support except location of cyberzones in PEZA.  The mindset (entrepreneurial mindset) has something to do with it.

Think about the banana that sells for PHP 100 each, or fresh mangoes in a nice box that sells for USD l00?  Think about the opportunity here (the product comes from PHL) and there (the market for that high selling price is in NYC or Tokyo)

The businessman must not stick to the traditional knowledge  on economics and business as he pursues his business objectives.  For example, typically, he says that barriers to entry of foreign business in PHL is high power cost.  While this is true for steel smelting or copper refinery, this is not a major factor in other industries where power is minor CGS!

He went at great length to explain the product space theory of Hidalgo and compares PHL with Thailand at various periods in history.

I love this presentation -  it is a strong supporter/advocate of entrepreneurship

He also used the Lego of Development as a metaphor for his speech where the children are the countries, the bricks are the capabilities.  As per my text conversation with Dean Albert of AGSB, he said he liked best Dr. Usui's talk best

Athens Cruz  and JP Molina of Sentrep attended the forum

Where is the monkey? Thailand vs PHL in l975

Thailand in PHL in 2008 - almost at parity

Entrepreneurship is an important aspect of Usui presentation

High ranking website on entreprepneurship despite being a new site

From Alexa site information on profjorgeentrep -ateneo.blogspot.com | January 21, 2013

I just came across Alexa information on this site on entrepreneurship;  it is ranked  856,895th in the world (out of 30 million websites) and 4,139 in the PHL.  Its audience are mostly Filipinos.  It is wonderful that it ranks relatively high despite being a do it yourself site by a non webmaster.  I simply use this as adjunct to teaching ala blackboard.

Thank you:  those who visit read the site, learn from this and entrepshare...

Green Innovation - Cash from Trash at MBAH Entrep class

Supporting Entrepreneuralism

Dra Apple pitching the respirator device from scrap tubing and IV bag.  Wow

January 12, 2013.  AGSB Makati Rizal.  9:00 am.  Our entrep class which was held in the morning today, had 4 activities:   ID project presentation, illegal activity, inspirational video,  and cash from trash.  The initial activity was the trash from cash (product design from negative materials - trash). Prof Danny Barrinechea who was doing photo ops for an AGSB ad campaign did a photo ops of the class.

For the trash to cash project, the class was asked to bring trash per group.  However, just to make sure that they think for the new product, the trash brought was raffled off and the instruction was improved to "make a product relevant to your profession/job.

Others that were presented were:  event souvenir from waste wrappers and paper by group of Dra. Miranda, bag from trash and Ipad cover from cartons by group of Ms. Orig (truly original),  CCTV protector from trash medicine container by group of Dr. Abel (welcome Dr. Abel)

Danae pitching their creation:   signature bag and iPad cover

Scratchproof and convenient;   the bag comes free?

The team that made the signature products

                                Someone is watching

Dr Abel pitching their CCTV monitor

Focus was needed to produce something from the litter and clutter

                                Note the signature belt

Making the product;  learning to do (or practicing to do)

Dra Miranda, who is also an events organizer with her souvenir from trash

Producing a product instead of cutting up a cancer tissue:  Dr. Judith C

The class did well;  they prepared well carefully selecting the trash to bring.  However the raffle of trash upset/disrupted their plans. Despite that, the more they were challenged to think and create something not from nothing but from a negative matter -- trash.  And truly, this a big challenge and practice for entrepreneurship.

Congratulations.

The potato straw penetration challenge <--->entrepreneurship and strategy

The goal is to penetrate the hard potato with a soft ordinary straw through and through

I get the students interested in positive thinking. in can do mindset, in learning to do with the potato straw penetration exercise. I got this from Mr. Silverio who owns and runs the Guadalupe Commercial Complex. He was our guest entrepreneur at ADB MBA entrep class.  He made the class do this.  I adopted this ever since.

This is strategic and entreprenurial.  Why?

The goal of this exercise is to penetrate the potato.  How do you do this?  You device various means (and this the whole idea of strategy/entrepreneurship)   In entrepreneurship, your  goal is to make a dream come true with little or no resources using a set of entrepreneurial skills and activities.

Strategy is achieving an objective selecting a set of resources and activities.

In order to penetrate the potato the various means were:

l.  Penetrate one side, when the straw became softer, bore at the other side using the other side of yet still stiff straw;

2.  Benchmark the others, imitate what they are doing.

3.  Use force;

4.  Do it slowly, screw the potato slowly

5.  Push and pull slowly  ('that is how JP describes it)

                                  Alvin did it first

                                   Working hard on the challenge

Evan and Athens came in next

                                   JP, Nelle and Lea

I got the potatos back;  to be used for potato salad

Our 3rd session (actual 2nd) for MBA Sentrep - not the typical MBA class

We opened the class with you tubes rendition of  Tanging Yaman.

We did the following:

l.  Lecture on introduction to entrepreneurship (from this blog and slideshare link) What were emphasized:   creating something new, innovation, new products, it is magic (from Walt Disney - Larry Farrel.  It is creating something from practicality nothing.

2.  At the mention of creating products, we did a re invention/redesign of the school id on a paired discussion.  The mock up and the new id concept will be presented by next Tuesday, December l8. (Athens proposed a mini Christmas party)

3.  Then we did a mind mapping of three concepts:   entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity.  For most, it is their first encounter of mind maps.

4.  The last part was the application of 3R from green innovation:   reuse, recycle, reduce.  How to create new product/or product from the waste/trash at 4f of AGSB Salcedo.  And they were able in 45 minutes able to come up with new notable products.  The product prototypes were the actualization of mind maps.

We said entrepreneurship is not a spectators sports;  it is about taking action and creating new products/services.  And we did just that.

Mind/conversation mapping (concept by Tony Buzan)
